"I NEVER WAS A BIG FAN OF CHICKEN BEFORE"
From: Reel
Published: Year 2000
Reel caught up with Chicken Run leading rooster Mel Gibson during the filming of his latest project, What Women Want. During the five-minute on-camera interview, Gibson proved to live up to his affable off-screen reputation as he discussed work he did years ago, and exuded genuine enthusiasm for this, perhaps the least glamorous of any of his roles.
Reel: This is only the second time you have done an animated film in your long career. What drew you to Chicken Run?
Gibson: I like these guys (co-directors Nick Park and Peter Lord). I think they've displayed their talent on many occasions, and it takes a long time to do what they do. They're the best at it every time they go out there, they get an Oscar or something. Personally, I find the product they put out very charming and funny. I got into it for the kids, but I think I enjoy it more.
Reel: Is it challenging for you to work without the physicality you are so associated with on-screen, and work with your voice alone?
Gibson: Yeah, it's a different kind of skill one that I am getting more comfortable with. You have to use your imagination a little bit more, but they help you along. If you're not quite there, they'll kick in and say, "Hey, he's falling down a chute at this point. You have to make it sound that way."
Reel: You only had one actual recording session with other members of the cast. Did that make it difficult for you to achieve an on-screen chemistry with your co-stars?
Gibson: I don't think so. I think the one session I did have was very helpful, because you could take that and run with it. But you imagine the best reading coming at you, and give back the response. So it's just an exercise.

Reel: Chicken Run is very much an homage to classic prisoner of war escape movies. Did you to try to incorporate elements from previous characters from those films like Stalag 17 and The Great Escape in your performance?
Gibson: Yeah, sure. I think they've done that real well, and that's the fun of it. It reminds you of all those things I was kinda like Steve McQueen and Von Ryan's Express you forgot, ever see that? Great movie, it's got all these British prisoners and they get this Yank in there who's played by Frank Sinatra.
Reel: I thought I picked up a bit of James Garner.
Gibson: Yeah, yeah, Jimmy Garner. He's in there. But you take from all those movies those were my favorites on TV when I was growing up,
Reel: And, finally, has working on this picture changed your dietary habits at all made you more sympathetic to chickens, perhaps?
Gibson: Well, you know, I never was a big fan of chicken before but I am now!
