HALF A LIFE TOGETHER
Interview: Year 2002

How long have you been married now?
Over twenty years
Do you find each other finishing your sentences and thoughts?
Yes, and I think that comes with being together a long time and sharing your lives. And some of it's hardwon. There are blind spots where you can't possibly imagine what she's thinking. Because I did this, why is her reaction that? I just don't get it. So it's only through trial and error and all the shared experience and trying to analyse all of it in a calm fashion that you get it. Itīs a matter of really trying to start in their shoes. And then you do start thinking the same things. We did that just last night. And it's a great thing.
So who's the boss in your house, you or Robyn?
It depends. I think when it comes to a lot of decisions, man, my wife is definitely the boss. That's all there is to it. She's head office. She's central, and everyone revolves around her. I'm a bit like one of the kids, sometimes.
In what ways are you like a kid?
God, in so many ways, as we all are. I'm a bit messy around the house, that kind of thing. I'm a slob. So she's always saying. "Hey, pick that up with you! How many times have I told you not to throw a wet towel on the bed?" (Laughs) But that's just the superficial stuff.
Who disciplines the kids?
We both do. I'd say she's probably more vigilant about it and on it more than I am. Every now and then I'll really have to take care of something that's maybe a little tricky. But she's the day to day boss and doing all the grunt work.
