""Personally, and it´s well known publicly, I detest drugs, hate the damn things…I won´t go near them, and I would hate to think my kids or anyone´s kids could get hooked on them. We are the ones that make sure they don´t get hit."

In 1988 Mel was approached by writer-director Robert Town to star in "Tequila Sunrise". Towne was one of the most respected screenwriters in Hollywood. Robert had won the Oscar for "Chinatown" and been nominated two other times. ("The Last Detail" and "Shampoo").

Initially, Harrison Ford intended to star the film, but he ultimately balked at playing a drug dealer. Gibson was not sure he should accept the role, since he found the character´s business morally objectionable so Mel thought long and hard about his part in "Tequila Sunrise" and came up with the unique reason as to why the role was acceptable "No one´s perfect, and most of us have done something in life we regret or may even be ashamed of", he said. Moreover the project had interested Gibson from the first time he read the script.

Dale McKussic is a former drug dealer. The DEA wants to nail McKussic for his past crimes as well as lead them to an even bigger fish: his associates in the drug trade, known to authorities only as "Carlos" (Raul Julia). To further complicate things, Lt. Nick Frescia (Kurt Russell), the head ao the narcotic squad, is a longtime friend of Mac. Dale and Nick rival for the attentios of a beautiful restaurateur, Jo Ann (Michelle Pfeiffer).

Shooting took place in Santa Monica and the beaches of Manhattan, Redondo, Hermosa and Venice.

Mel´s companions were Raul Julia, Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer. While Mel enjoyed a sort of at-a distance working   rela- tionship with Michelle Pfeiffer, the actor   beca- me close pals with Kurt Russell and his family.

A pretty explicit sex scene , that involved Gibson and Pfeiffer, was the subject of much controversy. People asked whether both stars had used a body double during the movie´s highly charged love scene. A mysterious silence about this subject have been kept since then.

"Tequila Sunrise" came out in late 1988. The film received mixed reviews, partly because the critics found it hard to believe than an ex-drug dealer was a suitable hero for a romantic comedy. Though, Mel´s performance was reasonably praise."Mel Gibson is a consummate actor. He has the range and depth to make Mac a sympathetic character despite his past.", said "Films in Review" magazine. The $25 million budgeted movie ended up with a box-office take of $41 million.

      Mel´s fee was $1,5 million.

"When I first read the script of TEQUILA SUNRISE. I thought, well, What was that?. But I kept reading it. And I thought, I´ve got to read that again, That´s what the film is like. You think, What is going on here?. And then it just sucks you in."

Michelle Pfeiffer came a long way since working as a checkout girl in a supermarket. Stardom didn´t come easily. She first went to theatre classes at college, because it seemed like an easy way to get English credits. From here, she went into modelling (Miss Orange County) and commercials. There followed a series of bit-parts, usually as the blonde bombshell, in such forgotten movies as "The Hollywood Knights"and "Charlie Chan and the Dragon Queen". Pfeiffer got her first big break with the leading role in "Grease 2". Then came audition for the role of Al Pacino´wife in "Scarface". "Ladyhawke" was her next film Her portrayal of the victim of love in "Dangerous Liaisons" won her an Oscar nomination. Nowadays she´s married and got two kids.
