Gibson´first comedy was "Bird on a Wire" (1990), costarred Goldie Hawn.

Mel, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn had become good friends during the shooting of "Tequila Sunrise" and conversation kept coming round to the possibility of making a movie together, so when the Bird script surfaced, Gibson and Hawn decided that the project was perfect.

"Bird on a Wire" is an action-comedy. Mel plays a man in the government´s Witness Protection Program whose whereabouts are discovered by the drug dealers he´s got the goods on; he escapes and goes mirthfully on the lam, reluctantly helped by his ex-girlfriend (Goldie), with the killers in high pursuit.

Shooting was carried out mainly in Canada. and Gibson ´s salary for the picture was $4,5 million plus a percentage of the profits. The total budget of the movie was $20 million.

"The Bird on a Wire" set was very friendly, with the Gibson´s children frequently found in close proximity with Hawn´s. There were champagne toasts when Robyn announced she was pregnant for the sixth time.

A close friendship grew between Goldie and Mel. The two stars even infuriated director Badham by agreeing to tone down a love scene.

Critics around the world dismissed the film for having a silly plot and scorned Goldie Hawn performance, but Gibson´s acting abilities were generally well received.

Despite all the criticism, the movie became one of the bigger- grossing films of that year, making about $5 million more than the first Lethal Weapon, proving Mel´s growing appeal with audiences.

"Goldie certainly has a vivacious quality that never lets her dowm , I mean it´s like she´s always smiling and cheery. But there´s certainly more to her than the dumb blonde."
