This story began in May 2008, when Anonymous Content acquired the rights to the script of "The Beaver".
The Beaver by a neophyte screenwriter named Kyle Killen is the story of a man who is depressed, loses his job and family, but finds solace in the beaver puppet he wears on his hand, and which he treats like a living creature.
Killen's script got a lot of buzz early on and generated enormous interest in development circles, drawing comparisons to "Being John Malkovich" and 'Lars and the Real Girl." New York Magazine called it “one of the more elegantly fucked-up stories we've read in a long, long time.”, and ScriptShadow wrote: “It's not the best script I read on The Black List, but it's definitely the most memorable. And I think there's a lesson here. 9 out of 10 writers would've explored this concept as a broad comedy. The fact that we're essentially watching a drama about a guy who talks through a British beaver puppet distinguishes this script from every other script out there.”
In December 2008, The Beaver topped the Black List, a ranking of the 10 best unproduced screenplays anonymously submitted by industry insiders and compiled by Franklin Leonard at Universal. Since then, this little movie has gotten a lot of attention. At various times in recent months, Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, and director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) were all reportedly attached to the project.
On May 22, The Hollywood Reporter informed that Jodie Foster was in conversations about helming the movie. A few weeks later, Foster boarded the project and brought it to Gibson, with whom she co-starred in 1994's "Maverick.", and finally on July 10 Variety announced that Mel Gibson had signed to star in the film.
Mel Gibson will star in "The Beaver" for director Jodie Foster.
Anonymous Content's Steve Golin and Keith Redmon will produce the film. Producers are pushing for a September start date in New York.
Financing for the $18 million-$19 million pic has yet to be finalized. A studio could pick up the project or it could go the indie route, as Golin did with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Babel."
It's possible that Gibson's production company Icon could get involved in some way. Icon has distribution shingles in territories such as the U.K. and Australia.
Pic brings Foster back to feature directing for the third time, after 1991's "Little Man Tate" and 1995's "Home for the Holidays."

Project is currently in rehearsals, with shooting slated for late September in New York.
