Everything that farmer Graham Hess assumed about the world is changed when he discovers a message - an intricate pattern of circles and lines - carved into his crops.
A thriller set in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, focusing on the mysterious appearance of a five-hundred-foot design of circles and lines carved into a family´s crops. Mel Gibson starts as Graham Hess, the family patriarch who is tested in his journey to find the truth behind the unfolding mystery. Joaquín Phoenix is Merrill Hess, Graham´s brother and a former minor league baseball star.

"Sure, there are a lot of people
watching this who think this could be
a bad thing, but there are a lot of
people watching this, who think it´s
a miracle. A Sign of God´s existence.
It´s all in how you look at things
Merrill.
What you have to decide is what
kind of person you are? Are you the
type who believes in miracles and
looks for signs or are you the kind
who believes, things just happen by
chance?" Graham Hess
One of Shyamalan´s key ingredients for "Sigms" was his attraction to the "beauty, the grandeur and the mystique" of crop circles. "They are really just a platform from which the movie springs," he explains, "but it is a phenomenon that has always intrigued me as a subject." He clarifies, "for me, supernatural things are all metaphors for the human story. They serve as devices for "testing people and finding out what people are made of and getting people to say what they need to say to their loved ones. It´s a kind of costume to reveal what´s true about the movie."

"They´re still there hovering. In fact
some people think there´s more of
them now. All over the place. Over
us even.
And there´s a theory about the crop
circles now. They think it could be
some kind of landmark. Visual
mapping system - so they can
navigate. Coordinate. Make sense
doesn´t it?" Merrill Hess
The title, "Signs", alludes to a few of the film´s layers, says Shyamalan. "The title definitely has two meanings," he says. "One is the crop signs that they find in their yard and the signs that are happening around the world. But it is also about faith and the existence of signs from above."
