SIGNS

"It is strange to think aliens would come to a farm and make circles. I have heard that there are some circles that have a more legitimate aspect to them but most are easily explained away. I am not ruling out the possibility. I am just skeptical"

Everything that farmer Graham Hess assumed about the world is changed when he discovers a message - an intricate pattern of circles and lines - carved into his crops.
A thriller set in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, focusing on the mysterious appearance of a five-hundred-foot design of circles and lines carved into a family´s crops. Mel Gibson starts as Graham Hess, the family patriarch who is tested in his journey to find the truth behind the unfolding mystery. Joaquín Phoenix is Merrill Hess, Graham´s brother and a former minor league baseball star.

"Sure, there are a lot of people watching this who think this could be a bad thing, but there are a lot of people watching this, who think it´s a miracle. A Sign of God´s existence. It´s all in how you look at things Merrill. What you have to decide is what kind of person you are? Are you the type who believes in miracles and looks for signs or are you the kind who believes, things just happen by chance?" Graham Hess
One of Shyamalan´s key ingredients for "Sigms" was his attraction to the "beauty, the grandeur and the mystique" of crop circles. "They are really just a platform from which the movie springs," he explains, "but it is a phenomenon that has always intrigued me as a subject." He clarifies, "for me, supernatural things are all metaphors for the human story. They serve as devices for "testing people and finding out what people are made of and getting people to say what they need to say to their loved ones. It´s a kind of costume to reveal what´s true about the movie."

"They´re still there hovering. In fact some people think there´s more of them now. All over the place. Over us even. And there´s a theory about the crop circles now. They think it could be some kind of landmark. Visual mapping system - so they can navigate. Coordinate. Make sense doesn´t it?" Merrill Hess

The title, "Signs", alludes to a few of the film´s layers, says Shyamalan. "The title definitely has two meanings," he says. "One is the crop signs that they find in their yard and the signs that are happening around the world. But it is also about faith and the existence of signs from above."

"Kids are always great to work with, because they are pure and they come to it clean. And Joaquin is just a terrific young actor. Doing scenes with him, he feeds you a lot. He gives you so much. You can only give it back." Mel Gibson

"There is a lack of humility, that one must have all the answers. It´s not about that. You have to be prepared to trust even if things look grim. It´s matter of placing your well being in something greater."

M.Night Shyamalan

M.Night Shyamalan directs his fifth feature film with "Signs", following "Praying with Anger", "Wide Awake", "The Sixth Sense", and "Unbreakable". The great success of his psychological thriller "The Sixth Sense" catapulted the 31-year old into the stratosphere of being one of the most sought after young filmmakers in Hollywood. The film received a total of six Academy Awards nominations and was awarded three People´s Choice Awards.
Shyamalan began making films at the age of 10 in his hometown of Philadelphia. At 16, he had completed his 45th short film. At age 17, he decided to attend the New York University Tisch School of the Arts to study filmaking. During his final year at NYU, he wrote an emotional screenplay entitled "Praying with anger". This film was named Debut Film of the Year by the American Film Institute of Los Angeles.
In June 1995, he wrote the fantasy screen adaptation of "Stuart Little" based on E.B. White´s beloved children´s classic of the same name.
Shyamalan formed his own production company, Blinding Edge Pictures, which is based in a suburb outside of Philadelphia where he also currently resides with his wife and two daughters.

"Shyamalan is a really great director because he´s a great communicator. He conceived and wrote it ad directed it and even acted in it. He was involved on every level that a human being could be."

"I am not a guy who believes in little green men." Mel Gibson

CURIOUS THINGS

An ideal location   was discovered in Bucks County; the grounds of an agricultural college called Delaware Valley College, where the farmhouse, barn, garage and crop circles were located.
The actor Joaquín Phoenix replaced Mark Ruffalo, who had to drop out of starring in Signs to fully recover from an ear operation.
Abigail Breslin did her first commercial for Toys R Us when she was three years old. Aside from commercial work, "Signs" was her first theatrical project. She is now six years old.
The crop circles that have occurred around the world in countries like England and India were usually in wheat or barley. Yet one reason to use corn was that it was more believable for the scenes in which the characters are running and getting lost in the field."
"IT´S A FILM ABOUT SPIRITUALITY AND BELIEF AND FAITH." Mel Gibson
