20 JUNE 2008.- ACTORS'S STRIKE COULD HURT MASS. MOVIE BIZ

Source: Boston Herald
After escaping fallout from the three-month writers’ strike that ended in February, Massachusetts’ growing motion picture economy faces another potential setback in a looming strike by the Screen Actors Guild.
Local industry insiders believe the state’s tax incentive-induced movie boom that’s generated $545 million in spending since 2006 wouldn’t be dramatically affected if SAG hits the picket lines for a short-lived strike. But not so if there’s a drawn-out impasse.
“It’ll be a disaster if it happens,” said Boston Casting’s Angela Peri, who’s seen a 40 percent bump in business under the expanded tax credits. “Boston SAG actors paid their dues for the last 25 years and got hardly any work because no movies ever shot here. They can finally make a living being an actor, and it could be taken away.”
As SAG nears the June 30 expiration of its contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, Hollywood studios are scurrying to wrap productions in progress. And while SAG could extend the contract and allow its members to continue working while negotiations proceed, studios also are holding off on future commitments.
Massachusetts has hosted seven movie productions since January, and two continue to shoot: Martin Scorsese’s “Ashecliffe” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and “The Surrogates” with Bruce Willis. No other major studio flicks are scheduled for the rest of the year.
“All of the pictures that were slated for this spring were scheduled so that principal photography could be finished before the end of the actors’ contract,” said Nick Paleologos, executive director of the Massachusetts Film Office. “We’ve got lots of folks who are circling the runway, but studio pictures are not making commitments until the actors’ contract is resolved.”
But two independent movies slated to shoot here this summer - an Italian TV film and Mel Gibson’s “Edge of Darkness” - would continue despite a strike, and the Gibson production likely will extend into fall, Paleologos said.
“I honestly believe that even if there is a (strike), that we’re still going to be in business this summer with at least two pictures,” he said. “And I don’t think anyone, even the most pessimistic people, feel that if the actors’ strike happens, that it’ll be for a long time.”
But Chris O’Donnell, business manager of Local 481 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, is worried. “I’ve got a lot of members who make a living in the industry,” he said. “Any work stoppage or slowdown is going to affect their ability to do that.”

"It was back in 1983 when Hollywood came calling for help teaching Mel Gibson and crew how to play softball. Gibson was starring with Sissy Spacek in the movie The River. A major part of the movie was filmed around the Kingsport area. Baseball coach Mike Ritz and area softball legend Laddie Harwood we chosen for the job. There isn't much softball played in Australia where Gibson hails from so he had to learn from the ground up. Cloud Park became the training camp with Ritz working on Gibson's hitting and Harwood working with Scott Glenn on pitching. Their movie characters were rivals and scene featured a softball game with Gibson facing Glenn as the pitcher.
Although the softball game scene took a small portion of the movie, Gibson and Glenn worked hard at being proficient enough to look like they were real softball players."

SJ Grant Thornton is organising an annual Corporate Leader of the Year Award in conjunction with the official release of its third International Business Report (IBR).
Speaking to The Edge Financial Daily recently, SJ Grant Thornton managing partner Datuk Narendra Kumar Jasani said the award, which would be presented at a ceremony on July 15 at KL Hilton, would acknowledge individuals who have shown long-term dedication to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
“To promote CSR, we can’t just publish a CSR survey; we must recognise outstanding contributions to CSR among the business community,” he said. Jasani said that businesses should not only look at profits but also positively contribute to society by improving the quality of life, environment, sustainability and fair pricing, for example.
A charitable cause nominated by the winner would be promoted by SJ Grant Thornton internationally via the group’s website and global client base — a move that would not only benefit the nominated charity but also enhance SJ Grant Thornton’s CSR activities, said Jasani.
International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is scheduled to officiate the event, while Grant Thornton USA has shown its support by engaging actor and environmentalist Mel Gibson as the guest speaker of the awards ceremony.

24 JUNE 2008.- PAPARAZZI ATTACKED IN MALIBU

And the guys have put up a stachoo to paparazzi!!! They´re jolly clever, aren´t they?

Fellow surfers took exception to paparazzi invading their beach to photograph Matthew McConaughey. A heated confrontation between several boarders and gathered paparazzi took place Saturday afternoon at Malibu’s Paradise Cove, allegedly ended in injuries and a ruined camera.
As photographers watched the ‘Dazed and Confused’ star navigate the waves, a group of beachgoers confronted them and ordered them to leave. According to the Associated Press, after exchanging words the surfers attacked at least one of the lensmen and threw his camera into the water. The paparazzo filed a police report following the incident.
McConaughey, 38, who was not involved in the melee, coincidentally appeared as himself in the film ‘Paparazzi’ in 2004. Produced by Mel Gibson, the film portrayed the popular actor seeking revenge on four tabloid photographers who caused his wife and child to be seriously injured in an automobile accident.
