29 DECEMBER 2007.- 2008, WITH A BIT OF LUCK
When you get up January 1st try getting out of bed on the right side. This does not refer to the "right" which is the opposite of "left", but the "right" which is the opposite of "wrong". In order to know which is which, you must first place your bed along an east-west axis and not a north-south one. Once this is established, you must take care not to get out of bed on the same side that you climbed into it. Of course, sticking to this procedure may cause problems if you happen to share a bed, but it is important all the same: failure to do so will mean that you will get out of bed on the wrong side and, as a consequence, you will be ill-tempered all day because youīll have missed the chance of having a bit of luck in 2008.
And HAPPY 2008!!!!

5 JANUARY 2008.- REVIEW, "BRAVEHEART SPECIAL COLLECTORīS EDITION"
Source: ultimadisney.com
"Gibson's greatest success with Braveheart is, however, as director. Magnificently shot, the movie knows just when to pull back, move in close, or cut.
The numerous battle scenes stay personal, though often horrifically gory. Turning away before crossing a line to excess, sensitivity and sensibility are constantly on display. The battles here aren't the displays of hectic camerawork and mass confusion that they are in so many other action movies. When warriors aren't being beheaded or impaled, impressive cinematography is on display, ensuring that the film remains visually satisfying throughout."

8 JANUARY 2008.- UNCOVERING DANUMīS TREASURES

TREES here are so tall," notes a journalist during a media trip to Danum Valley Conservation Area (DVCA) recently. She was probably mesmerised by the many majestic tualang trees that rise at least 40m above the ground.
Even as we were admiring the last tract of virgin lowland forest in Sabah, logging continues in Malua Forest Reserve, just next to this 43,800ha conservation plot.
Vital role: The 260m-long canopy walkway in the Danum Valley Conservation Area is a hit among visitors. Studies show that rainforest canopy supports a significant proportion of total biodiversity and is sensitive to disturbance by logging and severe drought.
DVCA is part of the one million hectare forest concession allocated by the state government to Yayasan Sabah to finance the state social development by utilising its timber resources.
Fortunately, thanks to the foresight of scientists on the importance of pristine lowland forests to science, a part of the valley was set aside by Yayasan Sabah for conservation. In 1995, it was elevated to Class One protected forest.
Danum has long served the research interests of foreign scientists who make up more than 90% of the research community in the world-renowned tropical forest research station.
Way back in 1985, the Royal Society of Britain saw the potential of the valley. It entered into research collaboration with Yayasan Sabah to establish the South-East Asia Rainforest Research Programme (SEARRP), with Danum being the primary focus.
It is hoped that by gaining a scientific understanding of tropical rainforest systems, ecology and dynamics, a significant contribution could be made to their sustainable management and conservation.
RESEARCH FUNDS
Located 75km from Lahad Datu on the east coast of Sabah, Danum Valley Field Centre is the focal point of the research programme. Hundreds of senior scientists, young researchers and university undergraduates have conducted over 200 research projects in relation to tropical forests ecology over the last two decades, resulting in more than 370 scientific publications.
"In its 350-year of history, the Royal Society has never stayed this long with one programme. It usually goes in (to a place), build the research capacity and leave," says SEARRP programme manager and senior scientist Dr Glen Reynolds who had earned his doctorate based on his research in Danum.
That is because of the high quality research work made possible by the rich bio-diversity of the area. Last checked in 2002, the virgin forest hosts 110 species of mammals, 328 species of birds, 72 species of reptiles, 56 species of amphibians and 57 species of freshwater fish.
Key findings in DVCA show that selectively logged rainforest supports a remarkably high level of biodiversity, underscoring the importance of good forestry practices and that such logged forest should be retained and not converted into plantation. Studies also show that the rainforest canopy supports much biodiversity and is sensitive to disturbance by logging and severe drought.
Largely funded by Yayasan Sabah, DVCA also welcomes private and corporate sponsorship besides the Royal Society's annual Ģ1.2mil (RM8mil) research grant. Recently, it found one in Petra Foundation. In August, the charity arm of the conglomerate Petra Group and its Britain-based Green Rubber Global signed a sponsorship agreement in Kuala Lumpur, in the presence of Hollywood actor Mel Gibson.
The RM8mil funding to be spread out over seven years will support SEARRP research, training and environmental education in rainforest ecology.
Petra Foundation chairman Datuk Vinod Sekhar hoped that international and local researchers would have the opportunity to better understand the physical and biological processes operating within tropical rainforests and contribute to science base as well as conservation and sustainable use of rainforests.
"It is also our hope that it will help promote the training of young Malaysian research students and technical staff as they assist and learn from an international group of scientists and researchers," he said.
Reynolds said some 50 Malaysian scientists have participated in the programme, representing 10% of researchers hosted by SEARRP.
To facilitate research in the rainforest, the programme employs a team of research assistants, drawn mostly from local communities in Sabah, to support scientists associated with SEARRP.

CLIMATE STUDIES
Reynolds pointed out that climate-related research would be the focus of SEARRP's work in the future with the presence of the 100m-tall Global Atmosphere Watch station. The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministr-funded facility places Danum in an ideal position to support research in the fields of climate change, atmospheric chemistry and canopy-atmosphere interactions.
One significant scientific contribution from SEARRP in Danum Valley is the carbon offset projects next door in Ulu Segama Forest Reserve.
The projects were the brainchild of the late Dr Clive Marsh who initiated the reduced impact logging and degraded forest rehabilitation projects - the first of its kind in Asia.
The implementation of techniques for reducing the impact of logging, thus avoiding destruction of biomass (carbon store) and release of carbon was the central idea behind the project between New England Power Company of the United States and Yayasan Sabah's Innoprise Corporation.
The project aims to reduce damage to residual stand by half through the adoption of guidelines for timber harvesting.
Another ongoing project is the Innoprise-FACE (Forest Absorbs Carbon Dioxide Emission) Foundation forest rehabilitation scheme in 30,000ha of highly degraded logged forest. Referredd to as Infapro, the 25-year project operates under a three-year renewable contract.
As trees grow faster in the tropical region, they therefore absorb more carbon dioxide compare with reforestation in temperate areas. Hence, FACE Foundation, an organisation set up by the Dutch Electricity Generating Board, teamed up with Innoprise in 1992 to fund reforestation in a bid to partially offset the emission of from their coal -power plants,
To speed up forest regeneration, seedlings of preferred timber trees are planted. A nursery capable of producing over one million dipterocarp seedlings, support the replanting. To date, the project has rehabilitated over 12,000ha of forest and has also established 300 sample plots for carbon monitoring.
"The days of the timber industry are nearly over. Tropical forests are worth more standing than cut down. Malaysia will find itself sitting on a gold mine in terms of carbon sink," said Reynolds.
He said most production forests in Sabah needs restoration and the labour-intensive replanting and monitoring work meant that with currently available resources, only some 1,000ha could be rehabilitated each year.

8 JANUARY 2008.- CAPRICORNS ARE FAMILY ORIENTED, BUSINESS SAVVY
Capricorn (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19) is one of the Earth signs, along with Taurus and Virgo, and people under this sign are often attracted to dark, mysterious, emotional individuals. Capricorns are typically very hard workers and very ambitious. They know the value of money and are not spendthrifts. They are also charitable and will do what is possible to help others who are less fortunate.
Capricorn women tend to be very devoted to their family and very ambitious for their children. They want their children to have every advantage they lacked as a child. They tend to have children early on in life.
A female Capricorn can be quite an asset as a wife, as she can give good advice about business matters. They are always well mannered and excellent hostesses.
Female Capricorn celebrities include: Kate Moss, Diane Keaton, Kate Bosworth, Sienna Miller, Kirstie Alley, Amanda Peet, Janis Joplin, Dolly Parton, Mary J. Blige, Naomi Judd and Gabrielle Carteris.
Capricorn men can be the humorous life of the party, but emotionally they can be a bit closed and difficult to get to know. They are most themselves when in the comfort of their own homes.
Capricorn men are also very careful when it comes to financial matters. Like Capricorn women, they are very family oriented and take a lifelong interest in seeing their children make something of themselves.
Male Capricorn celebrities include: Orlando Bloom, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey, MEL GIBSON, Jude Law, Denzel Washington, Ricky Martin, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Manson, Anthony Hopkins, L.L. Cool J, Howard Stern, Kid Rock, Patrick Dempsey, Ryan Seacrest, Rob Zombie and Val Kilmer.

10 JANUARY 2008.- MUSEUM TO DISPLAY STATEīS FILM CONNECTION
Source: www.charleston.net
Hollywood routinely makes an exhibition of itself, and given the film industry's forays into Palmetto State locations, it's only fitting that the South Carolina State Museum return the favor, albeit it in more seemly fashion.
"The exhibit will showcase the significant number of movies produced in the state over the past 100 years and give our guests an idea of the complexity of the undertaking and the organization needed to produce a motion picture," says the museum's chief curator of history, Fritz Hamer. "It also will be a lot of fun for folks to see the many costumes, photos, artifacts and pieces of equipment, some very famous and familiar, that have contributed to some of their favorite Hollywood movies."
Apart from presenting a chronicle of features and telefilms made in the state during the 20th and early 21st centuries, the exhibit also will include documentaries and educational films.
What will you see?
The "fat suit" worn by Eddie Murphy in "The Nutty Professor 2," a dress worn by Julia Roberts in "Something to Talk About," the gallows constructed for Mel Gibson's Revolutionary War epic "The Patriot," a pair of pants worn by Kevin Bacon in "Death Sentence," the "interview" couch used in "The Big Chill," a knife wielded by John Wayne, a working fire engine used in the TV miniseries "Chiefs" and costumes worn by the cast (Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Irons) of "Die Hard With a Vengeance." Plus scripts, models and other props, film equipment and more.
Clips from various films, including "Forest Gump," will be displayed on monitors throughout the exhibit gallery.
"We'll also incorporate short interviews with local South Carolinians involved in films that were made here," says Hamer.
The exhibit runs through Oct. 19 with a $3 admission fee.
