19 NOVEMBER 2007.- THE TOP 20 WAR MOVIES OF ALL TIME
11."Gallipoli" and 10."Braveheart"
|
Source: Startribune.com
In rapid fire, here are the 20 best war movies by Alan Smithee.
1 "Ran" (1985): Blood, gore in feudal Japan and the best battle scenes ever on film, provided by Akira Kurosawa.
2 "The Thin Red Line" (1998): I like how Terrence Malick gets into the heads of his characters to contemplate conflict and man's inhumanity to man.
3 "Apocalypse Now" (1979): A stunner from start to finish, including all of Marlon Brando's mishmash. The film would be great for the helicopter scene alone.
4 "Schindler's List" (1993): There are moments that rank among the most forceful and compelling in filmdom.
5 "Zulu" (1964): The real-life 1879 battle pitting 139 Welsh infantrymen against 4,000 African warriors is filmed as an engrossing lesson in tactics and leadership.
6 "Das Boot" (1981): A riveting, claustrophobic look at World War II in a German U-boat.
7 "Saving Private Ryan" (1998): The 20 minutes of beach footage is astounding. And Tom Hanks' performance is one of his best.
8 "Grand Illusion" (1937): Jean Renoir's remarkable depiction of captured French soldiers in World War I evolves into a meditation on changes in European societal viewpoints.
9 "Casablanca" (1942): You must remember this.
10 "BRAVEHEART" (1995): Mel Gibson's 13th-century tug-of-war between Scotland and England has great battles and great bravura.
11 "GALLIPOLI" (1981): Peter Weir's stunning take on World War I's fatal battle between Australians and Turks stars Gibson and Mark Lee.
12 "Paths of Glory" (1957): Stanley Kubrick's antiwar saga.

13 "Glory" (1989): For the soundtrack to his final Civil War battle, Edward Zwick smartly chose "Carmina Burana."
14 "Starship Troopers" (1997): Its gung-ho, fascist machismo cuts a nice satiric edge through battles to beat the bugs.
15 "Downfall" (2004): In one of the great modern-day performances, Bruno Ganz plays the bunkered Adolf Hitler as his country collapses around him.
16 "The Great Escape" (1963): World War II POW camp as pure entertainment. It's a must-see for Steve McQueen's motorcycle ride alone.
17 "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957): David Lean's vibrant, epic tale of Pacific arena politics, gamesmanship and insanity.
18 "Full Metal Jacket" (1987): Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam War film's first half explodes with blistering basic training, headed by an on-fire R. Lee Ermey.
19 "Platoon" (1986): The Vietnam War is a battle for Charlie Sheen's soul.
20 "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930): World War I is a battle for German soldiers' souls.

25 NOVEMBER 2007.- MEL GIBSON IS BACK IN THE RACE FOR CINEMA CHAIN
MEL GIBSON is back in the race for the trendy art house cinema chain Dendy.

Source: Business.smh.com (Australia)
MEL GIBSON is back in the race for the trendy art house cinema chain Dendy. The Hollywood star's film distribution company, Icon, is one of several interested parties, including US cinema chain Reading and the new buyout owners of Hoyts Cinemas, sources close to the process said.
Dendy is owned by Paul Ramsay's Prime Media, which acquired the five cinemas and Moonlight Cinema when it took control of the Becker Group entertainment company in July.
Prime's chief executive, Warwick Syphers, confirmed at the company's annual general meeting in Sydney yesterday that the sale of the cinema and film businesses was proceeding. The company hopes to complete the process early next year.
Its adviser, the ANZ Bank, started talking to cinema operators and other possible buyers after Prime pulled out of the auction for the Hoyts cinemas in September, being outbid by the buyout firm Pacific Equity Partners. Missing out on Hoyts prevented Prime from getting the scope it wanted to stay in the cinema business.
Asked after its $440 million Hoyts acquisition whether it was also eyeing Dendy, Pacific Equity Partners said it "would definitely be open to further acquisitions if the opportunities are there". The US cinema operator Reading, which owns a stake in the business, has also stuck up its hand, as has the Victoria-based chain Palace Cinemas, sources said.
Mr Gibson's Icon Film Distribution, which markets movies including Death At A Funeral and the upcoming Bob Dylan film biography co-starring Cate Blanchett, doesn't yet own any cinemas in Australia. Its general manager, Greg Denning, declined to comment yesterday.
It's the second time that a company backed by Mel Gibson has looked at the Dendy chain. Dolphete, which is also part-owned by the Academy Award winner, earlier this year filed a complaint with the Takeovers Panel to prevent a carve-up of Becker that would have given the film and cinema division to its founder, Russell Becker, and his son Richard for $15.5 million.
Prime told shareholders yesterday that its reported annual profit will depend on the outcome of the Dendy sale. The group has seen "healthy" advertising demand in the first half, buoyed by the federal election campaign, Mr Syphers said.

Celebrities have been forced to flee their homes, as wildfires sweep through Malibu.
Hollywood stars were among nearly 10,000 people forced to flee as wind-driven wildfires tore through the celebrity enclave of Malibu, gutting at least 35 multi-million dollar homes and threatening hundreds more, officials and reports said.
Fires erupted at around 3:30am (local time) officials said, spreading rapidly through tinder-dry brush as winds packing gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour fanned the inferno, the second major blaze to hit Malibu in a month.
By 10:30am, around 890 hectares had been scorched as the flames burned unchecked, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.
Around 1,700 firefighters had been deployed to tackle the fires, backed up by 23 aircraft including water-dropping helicopters and a DC-10 which was pummelling the infernos with flame retardant.
Los Angeles county supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky told a press conference 10,000 residents had been evacuated. Only one injury had been reported so far, a firefighter who received burns which were not thought serious, he added.
The cause of the fire is not known.
Last month a devastating fire destroyed 1,847 hectares, six homes, two businesses and a church in Malibu.
The blaze was one of a series of state-wide infernos that left eight people dead, gutted 2,000 homes, displaced 640,000 people and caused more than $US1 billion ($1.14 billion) in damage.
Malibu, around 30 kilometres west of Los Angeles, is home to celebrities such as Sting, Jennifer Aniston, Mel Gibson, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Cher and Richard Gere.
Local media reports said actors Matthew McConaughey and Minnie Driver were among those forced to evacuate while Red Hot Chili Peppers bass guitarist Flea's home was destroyed by the flames.

27 NOVEMBER 2007.- GIBSON URGED TO REJECT FILM WITH ARMENIAN ALLEGATIONS
Source: Today´s Zaman
The Foundation for the Struggle Against Baseless Allegations of Genocide (ASIMED) has begun an e-mail campaign to try and dissuade actor Mel Gibson from playing a role in a film that underscores claims of an alleged genocide of Anatolian Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War I.
The president of ASIMED and faculty member at Atatürk University's history department, Professor Savas Egilmez, said in order to raise support internationally for Armenian allegations, various Armenian diaspora groups had set aside a fund of $100 million and this money had been given to Hollywood film production companies to encourage the making of such a film. Egilmez noted that more than one such Hollywood company is preparing to shoot a film supporting the Armenian view. "It is now being said that actor Mel Gibson is to play a role in one of these films. There is a push to have the film shot at Icon Productions, the company Gibson is a partner in," said Egilmez.
Egilmez noted that a similar situation occurred recently when Sylvester Stallone announced his plans to play a role in a new film adaptation of the book "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh." After a campaign led by ASIMED in which more than 3,000 e-mails were sent to Stallone, the actor declined the role. "Stallone decided not to act in this film after the e-mail campaign we led. The European press also expressed concerns about the book's accuracy. We have begun sending documents about the truth of the situation to Gibson. We started an e-mail campaign to urge him to decline the role and to not allow this film to be shot at his production company. What we are facing is a new slander campaign on the level of the 'Midnight Express'. Everyone needs to be sensitive and aware on this topic. We need to put pressure on this famous actor by telling him the truth of the matter," stated Egilmez.
