22 OCTOBER 2007.- WILDFIRES BLAZE ACROSS CALIFORNIA

Source: BBC News
Several major Hollywood celebrities have been forced to flee their homes as wildfires rage through southern California, causing massive devastation.
The mansions of Titanic director James Cameron and Australian actress Olivia Newton John have reportedly been evacuated, while properties belonging to Barbra Streisand and Mel Gibson are said to be under threat.
The wildfires are thought to have started when a power cable was torn down by heavy winds on Sunday, igniting shrubs left tinder dry by one of the hottest summers on record.
Gusts of up to 80 miles per hour spread the flames which have claimed one life, left four firefighters injured and destroyed 1,250 acres of land, a church and several houses.
Thousands of residents have been evacuated as the fires blaze through exclusive Malibu, threatening scores of multi-million dollar homes, many of which belong to household names including Sting, Jennifer Aniston, Pierce Brosnan, Robert Redford, Cher, Richard Gere, Martin Sheen and Whoopi Goldberg.
Fire inspector Ron Haralson said: "The residents understand the danger. They understand the importance of getting a head start or a jump on fires such as this that move very quickly and are erratic, so the residents there have been cooperating."
More than 500 firefighters are battling to contain the flames, as they quickly devour hundreds of acres of tree-lined hillsides, filling the area with thick smoke.
Malibu mayor Pamela Conley Ulich said: "This fire is zero per cent contained, which means we are at the mercy of the winds."
The governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, said he was receiving regular updates on the fires and would send more rescuers if necessary.

22 OCTOBER 2007.- MEL GIBSON MEETS WITH AN OLD FRIEND

Mel Gibson and Dogmatix (Idéfix), the constant companion of Mr Obelix, are old pals.
Gibson and Dogmatix met in the winter of 1994. At that time, Mel Gibson had declined to play the Scottish revolutionary William Wallace, because he believed he was too old to take the role, but the film's producers disagreed with him. Bruce Davey, who´s a very wise gentleman, advised Gibson to pay a visit to Getafix, the venerable druid, and to buy a bottle of his famous magic potion.
The magic potion gave superhuman strength to Mel Gibson and "Braveheart" received ten nods and Mel won two Oscars.

24 OCTOBER 2007.- MALIBU FIRE REACHES 15% CONTAINMENT

MALIBU FIRE REACHES 15% CONTAINMENT

MALIBU - Containment reached 15 percent Tuesday around the Canyon Fire, which burned nearly a dozen homes and businesses and blackened 4,400 acres in the seaside paradise of Malibu.
Officials said it may take weeks to completely extinguish the blaze that ignited at 4:50 a.m. Sunday, the first of more than a dozen firestorms that swept across Southern California.
"Right now, it's looking good," said Los Angeles County fire Inspector Rick Dominguez. "There's no active fire and no homes threatened." Fanned by powerful Santa Ana winds, the Ranch Fire destroyed six homes, two businesses and a church and damaged nine homes and five businesses.
Among the ruins: Malibu Presbyterian Church and the Kashan Castle, also known as Hodge Castle, a hilltop landmark built in 1978.
About 2,100 residents were evacuated from the gated Malibu Colony, including celebrities Jennifer Aniston, Bill Murray, Cindy Crawford, Kelsey Grammer, Tom and Rita Hanks, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Nick Nolte, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, Sting, and Diana Ross, producers David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg, and MEL GIBSON, whose wife was forced to evacuate along with the couple's twin boys,

24 OCTOBER 2007.- REAL PEOPLE

I can imagine the excitement in the "Entertainment Tonight" newsroom as the California wildfires roared toward A-listers' homes.
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott's bed and breakfast has been evacuated. The cast of "24" was sent home. James Cameron's mansion is one of thousands threatened.
Fortunately for these celebrities, they can afford to rebuild or renovate one of many vacation homes. But for countless others out there, their lives will be devastated.
So here's what I say to those celeb-driven TV shows, Web sites and magazines: Let's have a little less breathless reporting about celebs in danger and instead focus on the ones who are doing good. David Geffen opened his Malibu compound to firefighters battling the flames. Mel Gibson encouraged volunteers who were helping evacuate animals off his ranch to help his neighbors, too.
For once, I want to hear about the real people

25 OCTOBER 2007.- VILLA ROTARIA MEL GIBSON

Villa Rotaria Mel Gibson, which has been financed partly by Mel Gibson Foundation, will become a reality very soon. Mr Luis Roji Uribe put the project in motion last Sunday in San Andres Tuxtla.
The new block of flats will house municipal clerks whose dreams will come true thanks mainly to $1 million donated by Mel Gibson Foundation to build 387 houses for needy families.

The spectacular burning of a towering hillside wicker figure will have an added Hollywood-style edge tomorrow.
Up for grabs at the annual Wickerman crowd-pulling fire festival at Oyne near Insch will be a replica of the sword made for Mel Gibson in the movie Braveheart.
Created by film armourer and ancient weapons expert Brian Davenport, the sword has been donated by the craftsman to raise funds for the venue, Archaeolink prehistory park.
The highlight of the Sunday spectacle will be the ritual 5pm procession up Berryhill to the wickerman statue.

Firefighters Sunday hoped to hold on to the strong gains they made against Southern California blazes, despite a forecast of warmer, drier weather and a continuing threat to some homes.
The blistering Santa Ana winds that whipped fires over more than a half-million acres earlier in the week were replaced by light breezes and even some rain on Saturday but another change in direction was expected to bring drier weather to Orange and San Diego counties.
The fires have torched 1,790 homes but more than a dozen had been surrounded and nine others were 40 to 97 percent contained.

Mel Gibson, who has been out of the public eye for most of the year, turned out for the L.A. premiere of American Gangster on Monday night, curious to see a movie made by three of his friends - Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott.
"These three big players here ... they're all friends of mine," Gibson told Extra. "I'm an admirer of their work individually. I just want to see what they can cook up together, you know."
Gibson, 51, whose last directorial effort was 2006's Apocalypto, said he could see himself working with all three in future. "Maybe I'd like to direct [a movie] with all of them in it, including Ridley," he said.
