Mel Gibson's Mayan Fantasy

When I first heard about Mel Gibson's new film, "Apocalypto," I was curious. As someone who is Mexican Indian, I was struck by Gibson's investment in a project about an ancient Mesoamerican civilization.
The film is visually stunning with its reconstruction of Mayan architecture. And it casts mostly Indian actors who speak in the Mayan Yucatec language. But the plot fills me with disgust, rage and indignation.
What is so offensive is the film's violence. Gibson shows a head falling from the steps of the central Mayan pyramid. He also shows several scenes of sharp obsidian blades plunging into human flesh to extract pulsating hearts.
This nonstop carnage portrays the Mayans as bloodthirsty savages, a stereotype that is painfully familiar to Indians.
Although sacrifice was an important and mostly symbolic part of Aztec and Mayan spirituality, many of the accounts given by Spanish soldiers and priests were grossly exaggerated. Archaeologists have been unable to find the mass numbers of sacrifices that Spanish accounts claimed.
What's more, scholars who study the art of warfare of Mesoamerican societies, such as the Mayans and the Aztecs, acknowledge that these civilizations followed strict rules of war. Although warrior societies did set out to find captives, they did not raid villages or burn houses or rape women or dispose of children. Such cowardly acts would have brought them shame and dishonor............

All Maya ritual acts were dictated by the 260-day Sacred Round calendar, and all performances had symbolic meaning. Sexual abstinence was rigidly observed before and during such events, and self-mutilation was encouraged in order to furnish blood with which to anoint religious articles. The elite were obsessed with blood - both their own and that of their captives - and ritual bloodletting was a major part of any important calendar event. Bloodletting was also carried out to nourish and propitiate the gods, and when Maya civilization began to fall, rulers with large territories are recorded as having rushed from one city to the other, performing bloodletting rites in order to maintain their disintegrating kingdoms.
For the Maya, blood sacrifice was necessary for the survival of both gods and people, sending human energy skyward and receiving divine power in return. A king used an obsidian knife or a stingray spine to cut his penis, allowing the blood to fall onto paper held in a bowl. Kings' wives also took part in this ritual by pulling a rope with thorns attached through their tongues. The blood-stained paper was burned, the rising smoke directly communicating with the Sky World.
Human sacrifice was perpetrated on prisoners, slaves, and particularly children, with orphans and illegitimate children specially purchased for the occasion. Before the Toltec era, however, animal sacrifice may have been far more common than human - turkeys, dogs, squirrels, quail and iguana being among the species considered suitable offerings to Maya gods.
Priests were assisted in human sacrifices by four older men who were known as chacs, in honour of the Rain God, Chac. These men would hold the arms and legs of a sacrificial victim while the chest was opened up by another individual called a nacom. Also in attendance was the chilam, a shaman figure who received messages from the gods while in a trance, and whose prophecies were interpreted by the assembled priests.

In the Mexican mythology we have as a key-note the custom of human sacrifice. It has often been stated as exhibiting the superior status in civilisation of the Maya that their religion was free from the revolting practices which characterised the Nahua faith. This, however, is totally erroneous. Although the Maya were not nearly so prone to the practice of human sacrifice as were the Nahua, they frequently engaged in it, and the pictures which have been drawn of their bloodless offerings must not lead us to believe that they never indulged in this rite. It is known, for example, that they sacrificed maidens to the water-god at the period of the spring florescence, by casting them into a deep pool, where they were drowned.
Cenotes exist all across the Yucatan peninsula in southern Mexico. They are sink holes in the limestone of the area that contain underground lakes. The Mayans believed these were gateways to the world of the gods. Accordingly they adopted the habit of sacrificing unfortunate individuals by chucking them in through the small openings in the ground that are the only sign of the cenote.
The Mayans did not think of this as a punishment, it was a privilege. This belief was confirmed by the fact the none of them ever returned. The fact that the person sacrificed promptly drowned in the underground lake did not seem to occur them as reason for them not returning.

28 DECEMBER 2006.- MEEīS COMPLAINTS

Deputy James Mee who arrested Mel Gibson six months ago says his superiors have harassed him ever since the famous report was leaked to the media.
"His life and career would be a lot different had he not made that arrest," his lawyer, Richard Shinee, said in a Times story on its website.
Sheriff's officials rejected the accusations.
"I disagree with the assessment that personnel in the department or at the station have been relating to him or supervising him in an unfair manner," said Neal Tyler, a division chief who oversees the sheriff's station where Gibson was booked.
Tyler denied Mee was being singled out and said he did not know of any problems with Mee's treatment. He declined to discuss Mee's specific complaints because of confidentiality rules.
After Gibson's much-publicized arrest, investigations were opened into whether Gibson received preferential treatment, and into who leaked Mee's report to TMZ.
"My client has denied he gave the report to anyone," Shinee said.

Last Tuesday, at about lunchtime, Mel Gibson put on his gear and climbed into an aeroplane, sandwiched between two instructors. At 12,500 feet Gibson and his two instructors jumped. After 50 seconds of free fall Mel opened his parachute. A few minutes later he landed close to where his wife was waiting; in fact, he landed so well that he remained upright and did not fall over.
"Itīs extraordinary," says Gibson. "Thereīs no sensation of speed because thereīs nothing to relate to. Youīre not flying past anything. You canīt hear anything. Everything is done by hand signals. And as soon as I put up my parachute, I shut my eyes and screamed: itīs just like putting on the brakes, only worse. You feel as though youīre going upwards! I wouldnīt have missed it for the world!"
Apparently the director of "Apocalypto", which opens in Spain next January, is a lover of dangerous sports. A few months ago he jumped off a 15 storey building in Veracruz.

29 DECEMBER 2006.- WHAT COMES AROUND IT GOES AROUND

What comes around it goes around. That's what the proverb says. I read that deputy Mee is in trouble now as he leaked out official documents to the media. What was his driving force and motivation to do so? No matter. What is important he did something he shouldn't do. I have a dual origin and once a guy told me something negative about one of the Nations I belong to. One evening we had a party and had a good time and had a chance to talk one on one. He said I am a very nice person. I looked at him and asked "Why did you talk bad things about my Nation? Are you aware that the opinion you shared with me that time was not really your opinion? Do you understand that politics of any form is nothing else than to separate people from each other?. Divide and rule is the motto of those who do not want us to celebrate together and become friends. Through individuals and through your own experience you will see and understand the reality. So, it is true I am nice and I am your friend I am not angry with you I know you are just a victim of blind aggression."
Sometimes I got angry to some and said things to hurt them. Normally this led most of the time even to more trouble and more aggression. That's a lucky situation when at least one person is mature enough to calm done the other one who gets out of his/her own control. That's strength, that's grace, something to respect. We are upset and angry time to time. There are many things we hear and see and feel what hurts. Blaming each other like frightened animals is the answer. In this material world everyone fights for their space, food and shelter at any price. That's not a civilization. It's a jungle. Lots of hurt and lots of fear. No trust when you meet betrayal. Someone has to stop first. Someone has to become mature and show a good example. The rest should shut up and follow the good example. A day will come when things will change. But lots of suffer, and loss will make people to change for better and to convert them to responsible and loving creatures.

It's bloody fantastic

"As with many of his films, there have been plenty of complaints about the accuracy of the script. Maybe he has got the odd detail wrong concerning cave paintings and who the Mayans used in their human sacrifices. But what he does brilliantly is take you back in time, place you inside the drama of a native tribe and make you feel as if you are really there.
The whole film looks authentic; it smells authentic.
This is partly down to his use of native language and his decision to put unknowns in key roles. But the quality of the cast is remarkable. Youngblood conveys the strength and terrible suffering of his character with total conviction, while Trujillo's Zero Wolf is one of the scariest villains we have seen on the screen for a long while.
There have also been complaints that Gibson's portrayal of the tribesmen is "racist". But he manages to make Jaguar Paw and his friends both exotic and familiar. They are not savages, but neither are they are some idealised jungle tribe blessed with ancient tribal wisdom that we modern westerners can all learn from. And what a nice change to see that, when it came to the cruelty of slavery, white Europeans didn't have a monopoly.
As a no-nonsense thriller, Apocalypto works superbly. However, Gibson couldn't leave it at that. He has to bring some bigger idea to the table - and that's the claim that this film is a kind of wake-up call to us so-called enlightened moderns, who need to see the parallels between the collapse of Mayan civilisation and the impending collapse of our own. But the one gaping hole in the film is any kind of coherent or convincing explanation for the decline and fall of the Mayans. Gibson also doesn't make clear the connection between then and now, other than some hazy stuff about greed and ecological waste.
That said, I have to admit that Apocalypto is the most fantastic film I never want to see again.

"WHAT'S GOOD? Mel Gibson's startlingly beautiful and unashamedly brutal Mayan epic is a cinematic treat. Shot in one of Mexico's last tracts of rainforest, this film stunningly recreates a distant civilization of magnificent pyramids and dense jungles at the time when the Mayan culture was coming towards an end. The temple sacrifice scenes are stunning, but what follows is an old-fashioned and extremely exciting dash through the jungle as Jaguar Paw (the impressive Youngblood) must escape Zero Wolf (the charismatic Trujillo) and his bloodthirsty warriors. Cue arrows, blowpipes, quicksand, traps and snarling beasts
WHAT'S BAD? The violence will be offputting for some, as will the subtitles and lack of star names. This is a film that is definitely unlike anything else around.
