25 AUGUST 2006.- APOCALYPTO AND "THE END OF TIME"
From The Northern Echo (UK)
According to a new book based on the prophecy of the ancinet Maya, December 21, 2012, will be the end of the world. So, asks Linday Jesnnings, how worried should be be?
ADRIAN Gilbert, the renowned author of The Mayan Prophecies, and now the revised version, The End Of Time: The Mayan Prophecies Revisited, admits he can feel a bit of a lone voice at times.
"I know some people think I'm a nutter," he concedes. "But I'm very careful what I say and I'm careful what I research. I don't believe we're as clever as we think we are and that our culture has all the answers."
The reason some people may view Gilbert as a "nutter" is for his fascinating work in the field of ancient mysteries. He's written about King Arthur; the secrets behind the Pyramids, and, latterly, the Mayan people and their prophecy that the end of the world as we know it will come on December 21, 2012 - at midnight to be exact.
Then, the present age known to Mayans as the Age of the Jaguar - which began on August 13, 3114BC on our calendar - will reach its completion and their calendar will click around to zero for the first time in more than 5,000 years.
The end date has intrigued scholars, such as Gilbert, since the Mayan system of time keeping was discovered 100 years ago. What baffles them is the way in which the Mayans invented a calendar with its climax coinciding with a unique astronomical event.
On December 22, 2012, the day after the end of the age, the Sun will be aligned, at the winter solstice, with the centre of our galaxy. It is an event which only happens every 25,800 years, making it the first time in recorded history it has happened.
"It is not an arbitrary position," says Gilbert. "It's like the hands of a clock being at 12 o'clock. The question is how did they manage the precision to know that was going to be such an important date thousands of years into the future when they didn't have telescopes and they didn't have computers?"
It is a fair question. The Mayans were Stone Age people who didn't even have the wheel. Nonetheless, they worshipped their gods, and built wonderful pyramids and temples in what is now Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. The Classic Mayans lived from AD 250 to 1000 and used sophisticated calendar systems.
"People tend to think of them rather like the Greeks in that they lived in city states rather than large empires and were constantly at war with one another," says Gilbert, 57, who lives in Kent. "They were expert astronomers and their greatest claim to fame was their ability to write. It's only in the last decades that people have been able to decipher their hieroglyphics."
Equally strange is that, according to many of the inscriptions they left behind, the start date on their calendar was 3,000 years before they were even around, and 2,000 years before the Olmec were alive, thought to be the earliest civilisation in Central America.
Either way, Gilbert believes we should take the prophecy seriously, the exact tenet being that a number of natural disasters will occur - earthquakes, tsunamis etc - before December 21, 2012, which will lead to changes in the way we live. It sounds a little vague, however.
"All the evidence around is that we are living in a time of change," says Gilbert. "I think we need to take that on board. I'm not saying it should be like Noah building an ark, but it would be wise to look at how we would cope without things like petrol or water.
"The Mayans were certainly more in touch with nature and were trying to appreciate things more instead of relying on materialism."
The Mayans produced some of the world's greatest art, temples and pyramids. But for reasons yet to be understood, the cities were abandoned in 1000. Like the fall of the Roman Empire, the end of the Classic Maya civilisation has baffled scholars for generations. But the Mayans saw life in cyclical terms and believed it was the natural order of things for each age to go through a cycle which ended in the destruction of all that had been before it. They saw this not as a permanent end, but as the beginning of a new cycle. They studied time cycles as a method of fortune telling.
Today, there are more than six million Mayan descendants living in Central America. They still use their different calendar systems - one of which is called the Long Count and involves 365 days a year, but they have 18 months comprising 20 days and a 19th month of five days. Many dress the way their ancestors did - the women in embroidered dresses known as 'huipil', the men in shirts and baggy trousers. And they still carry out rituals.
It is the Mayan elders of today, such as Carlos Barrios, who have issued the prophecy tied in with the end of the age. We need to take action against pollution and materialism, they warn, because they think "everything is going to happen". By everything, they mean more natural disasters and point to signs that the prophecy is already materialising in the form of the Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Kashmir. Next there will be fires in the form of magma, so the prophecy goes, and they cite the eruption of the 'supervolcano' at Yellowstone National Park in America.
Regardless of whether or not the prophecy comes true, it makes for interesting reading and filming. The collapse of the Mayan civilisation will be the subject of Mel Gibson's new film, Apocalypto Now, due out in January next year.

25 AUGUST 2006.- RUMOUR
According to contactmusic.com, Mel Gibson is making apology calls.
WHEN ARE WE GOING TO PUT THE WORDS *FORGIVE AND FORGET* INTO PRACTICE SO THAT WE CAN GO ON WITH OUR LIVES???
|
26 AUGUST 2006.- OLD-FASHIONED
THE ACT OF FORGIVING
Mel Gibson apologized, and more than once. They said, "That's not enough!"
Mel Gibson makes apology calls. They say,"He´s not sincere!"
Mel Gibson has a drink problem. They say, "Stop making excuses!"
Mel Gibson directed "The Passion of the Christ". They say, "This movie is the proof, he's anti-Semite."
Mel Gibson said,"I am not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with the leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one-on-one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.", and they reply, "We can't wait. No matter whether the guy is repentant, no matter what he can do or say, WE WANT HIS HEAD!"
FORGIVING is an old-fashioned concept that does not sell newspapers. FORGIVING is an odd idea that does not attract visitors to web sites.
But we still hope that one day THE ACT OF FORGIVING will be COOL again.

29 AUGUST 2006.- EFFEXOR, A RUMOR
From TransWorldNews
Mounting evidence suggests that Mel Gibson was a victim of a first generation depression drug.
After Mel Gibson's uncharacteristic rant about Jews during his DUI arrest, people were left scratching their heads. "What's wrong with Mel?" people around the world exclaimed. .12 is not a sufficiently high blood alcohol level to account for Mel's bizarre and disturbing behavior. People are wondering aloud what is really happening with Mel.
It is very likely that Mr. Gibson was a victim of the anti-depressant medication known as Effexor. In addition to the manufacturer Wyeth's warning about the possibility of its patients' increased risk of suicide, there is mounting evidence on
the Internet that this widely distributed drug is inducing alcohol abuse and psychoses in many of its patients, and therefore, should only be given as a last resort to long-term depression sufferers under tightly-controlled conditions.
Alan Nierob of Rogers and Cowa received information regarding the possible link between Effexor and Mr. Gibson's strange behavior on August 20, 2006.
-------------------------
FOR THE MOMENT THERE´S NO OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION OF THIS FACT.

31 AUGUST 2006.- ABOUT EFFEXOR RUMOR
We´ve just received an e-mail from a visitor to the site whose content might interest you.
--------------------
ABOUT EFFEXOR
Yes indeed, this is a RUMOR.
This is not a news item. The person who wrote this "news"
article is an anti-drug activist and he is using Mel's recent
circumstances to shed light on his protest. It's a sad thing,
to be sure.
There is no legal way that this man could have obtained any
of Mr. Gibson's medical information. He is very careful in his
article to only "imply" that Mel "might" have been on this drug.
Then, as if to make it look more legitimate, he throws in the
comment that Rogers and Cowan have been contacted.
This is utter bull-caca. And this article is being circulated
everywhere as if it were a fact.
It is just another attempt to use Mel Gibson's name to get attention
for a personal cause; nothing more.
Thanks for listening,
Ree

1 SEPTEMBER 2006.- "DAM BUSTERS" BY PETER JACKSON
Peter Jackson has announced that he's gathering a team for a "Dam Busters" remake.
As a child, Peter Jackson said he was a real fan of the 1954 version of "Dam Busters", a movie based on the book with the same name written by Paul Brickhill, which revolved around inventor Barnes Wallis and mission commander Guy Gibson.
About 10 years ago, he thought about producing a remake of the movie but he was surprised to find out that Hollywood star Mel Gibson had bought the film rights, held by British broadcaster Sir David Frost, and hoped to star and direct. Jackson said his agent "came back and said that [film company] Icon had the rights and that Mel Gibson was going to direct and possibly act in it. Obviously that didn't happen".
"I'd been chasing it for a long, long time but I forgot about it for a while at that point," Jackson said.
"Then, about two years ago, my agent got back to me to say Mel Gibson had dropped out and they were looking around for suitable film-makers to take it on. That's when I jumped on board."
Speculation over a possible "Dam Busters" remake was initially sparked in May.
The shooting is set to start early next year with a budget of $30-40m (£16-21m) and will be directed by Christian Rivers, the animation director on King Kong who will make his directorial debut on the project, renamed "Dambusters".
It will be backed by Hollywood's Universal Pictures and Europe's biggest film company, StudioCanal. Jackson's agent Ken Kamins and Sir David will be executive producers.

3 SEPTEMBER 2006.-CATEMACO, APOCALYPTO, GIBSON AND "LA MADRE DEL CURANDERO"
Confessions of a curandero´s mom
Now we find ourselves in a waiting room, commanded by a woman with ebony eyes. She introduces herself as Ignacio Cobix's confidante, housekeeper and mother.
"I knew from the start my son was gifted," she says. "A mother just knows these things. Even Mel Gibson came seeking his advice. He was in Catemaco, filming a movie about the Maya. You wouldn't recognize him, unshaven with a thick black beard. I didn't care for it. But I recognized his eyes. He has beautiful blue eyes."
Almost everyone in Catemaco claims that Gibson "was here." And maybe he was…
But what did THAT "Mel Gibson" need???

5 SEPTEMBER 2006.- MEL GIBSON APOLOGIZES
Mel Gibson has apologised for insulting the police officers who arrested him for drunk-driving.
Gibson, 50, had already publicly apologised to the Jewish community but he has now said sorry to the two officers.
He reportedly sent the policewoman he insulted a £275 bouquet of flowers accompanied with a note expressing his "sincerest apologies".
Gibson has also invited her and her Jewish colleague James Mee, who was subjected to his anti-Semitic comments, to the premiere of his upcoming film 'Apocalypto'.

7 SEPTEMBER 2006.- A PIECE OF STUPID INFORMATION

A positive attitude towards the very understanding paparazzi.
|
HEADLINE: First photo of Mel Gibson since last July.
The actor resurfaced Wednesday, sporting a Fedora and chomping on gum as he left his Santa Monica office.
Mel Gibson was clearly annoyed (ANNOY= to make someone a little angry or impatient, especially by repeated troublesome actions or attacks) with the unwanted attention, calling the paparazzo "unintelligible." ( UNINTELLIGIBLE = a foreign language)
We're told Mel has been at work all week, likely preparing for his upcoming release "Apocalypto," which is still set to premiere in December.
Messages to Paparazzo from this web site: ¡A freir esparragos!. UNINTELLIGIBLE.

8 SEPTEMBER 2006.- THE NEXT VICTIM, "APOCALYPTO"???
"APOCALYPTO"
From "The New York Times", WAITING FOR APOCALYPTO
"..And Mr. Gibson's new film, "Apocalypto," was already one of the most talked-about of the season, largely because of the Crazy Mel factor. Even for him, the oddball quotient is high. An action movie set in the dying days of the Maya civilization, the 15th century, "Apocalypto" was made in the Yucatec dialect without a single recognizable actor, and shot in the jungles of Mexico, where heavy rains slowed production and postponed its planned release from this summer….
As a director, he has been some kind of mad genius so far, anticipating what audiences want with startling clarity: making a sword-and-sandals epic when it was no longer fashionable, yet winning Oscars (including best director) for "Braveheart" (1995); turning what seemed a gigantic folly - a gruesome, subtitled, self-financed passion play - into a $600 million worldwide blockbuster with "The Passion" (2004). But those photos from Mexico and the subject of "Apocalypto were enough to make anyone wonder whether Mr. Gibson had finally gone around the bend and turned into some cinematic Kurtz, lost in the dark jungle.
The film is still being edited, so there's no way to know whether "Apocalypto" might be crazy-brilliant or just crazed And we know that his drunken Malibu tirade casts an inescapable shadow over the film's opening, raising many questions, including: Will "Apocalypto" really arrive on Dec. 8? As recently as last week Touchstone, the Disney division releasing it, insisted it would.
That's about all the studio will say about a movie that must have become an albatross, because the crucial question is: How can this film be marketed? Mr. Gibson's name and ability to chat up "Apocalypto" was its only real selling point. Now he trails apologies and questions about bigotry wherever he goes, which will make it pretty hard to stay on message about old Jaguar Paw.
Whatever happens with "Apocalypto," it would be unfair if his personal debacle were to overshadow Mr. Gibson's immense gifts and accomplishments as a director. Apart from commercial success, his films have been rich with action, emotion and visual interest….
…. his current off-screen problems are likely to deflect attention from "Apocalypto."
Mr. Gibson's drunken comments and his two public statements of apology have landed in a changed world of celebrity gossip and Internet speculation, which won't let this story fade.
Internet chatter and celebrity magazines probably won't lead many people to decide whether to see "Apocalypto" or not ….
Disney's marketing problem is complicated: how to reach the vast middle ground of people who are simply looking for entertainment
"Apocalypto" is not as big a financial nightmare for Disney as it could have been. Mr. Gibson's production company financed the film (the budget is reportedly under $50 million), and Disney has only domestic distribution rights. But that arrangement is costly enough. Legally bound to release the film, the studio has no choice but to tough it out.
And in the end, just as Mr. Gibson's actions have made him his own worst enemy, he may have no choice but to become his own greatest asset…."

8 SEPTEMBER 2006.- TOM FLETCHER, McFLY
McFly are one of the country's favourite boy bands. Karen Price quizzed founding member Tom Fletcher, who had originally auditioned for Busted, about his favourite things during a 10-minute phone call
Q: Who's your favourite celebrity?
A: I like Tom Cruise, although nobody else does. I think he is an incredible actor and he's been in some incredible films. I think people knock him too much. I like Katie Holmes as well. She's my dream woman and as Tom is with her he's got to be a legend. I also like Mel Gibson but he's always getting slated. I think he's extremely talented.

12 SEPTEMBER 2006.- THE WORLD IS MAD, MAD!!!
From "www.timesonline.com"
A husband almost throttled his wife during a heated theological argument triggered by a controversial Mel Gibson film, a court heard.
Michael Watson loosened his grip on the throat of his wife, Patricia, only when she appealed to his faith by gasping: "Do not touch God's anointed."
The court was told that the couple, both devout Christians, celebrated his birthday with dinner and a bottle of wine before sitting down to watch The Passion of the Christ.
Mrs Watson left the room, and her 44-year-old husband became so upset by the graphic depiction of the Crucifixion that he pulled the leads out of the television and went upstairs.
His wife then decided to watch the God Channel and went to ask him why the television was not working.
Yvonne Jobling, for the prosecution, said that an argument developed, and Watson accused his wife of being evil. He grabbed his wife by the throat and she fell to the floor. She said: "His grip was so tight she was unable to speak, but she then managed to say something of a religious nature which seemed to cause him to relax his grip."
Magistrates in Bedlington, Northumberland, were told that Mrs Watson, a 51-year-old care worker, had gasped: "I'm anointed by God. You know that, Michael. Do not touch God's anointed." Mrs Watson, who was left with red marks and soreness to her neck and a grazed forearm, later told police that she had believed that her husband was going to kill her. Watson told the police that everything his wife said about him must be true because she never lied.
Tony Malia, in mitigation, said that Watson had gone upstairs in an attempt to get away from the argument after their "religious discussion" about the film became heated. His wife had followed him and tried to remove his wedding ring. When he was interviewed by the police, Watson immediately accepted he had gone too far. Watson, who is unemployed, from Blyth, Northumberland, pleaded guilty to assault and was given a two-year supervised community order. The magistrates took into account his early guilty plea and the fact that he had shown genuine remorse.
The couple separated after the attack but are now attempting a reconciliation.

12 SEPTEMBER 2006.- FAMILY MOTTO
Scotland´s clans are famed the world over for their tartans and traditions, but they have another, often overlooked but illuminating, symbol of their heritage. The family motto, which often features on the personal coats of arms held by the clan chiefs, are thought to have originated as battle cries in medieval times.
But if there is one Scottish family motto that needs little or no explanation, it must be that of the Wallaces: "For Freedom", which will be forever associated with the film "Braveheart".

- Sharon Osbourne reveales Mel Gibson is on her wish list for future guests on The Sharon Osbourne Show. She says she´d like to give the Hollywood veteran "a good talking to"...and send him early to bed as a punishment, we guess.
- "Martin Riggs".- He shares a name with Mel Gibson's wild cop character from the "Lethal Weapon" flicks, but police say Mokena resident Martin Riggs robbed banks instead of safeguarding them.
Riggs, a former bank employee, was arrested about 4 p.m. Tuesday, shortly after robbing the Palos Bank & Trust, police said.
They said he's the first Mokena resident charged in a local bank heist in more than 20 years.
Police said he confessed to the holdup and to robbing another Mokena bank twice since December, making off with a total of about $5,600.
And now, who owns the copyright for "Martin Riggs"? A dreadful litigation is on the horizon...
- Mel Gibson's plea for forgiveness may not be enough to avoid having his "Braveheart" image removed from the Schaumburg Township District Library.
On Tuesday, the library board will discuss a request to take down a poster that features Gibson in his film about the Scottish warrior William Wallace.
It was not clear whether the request to remove the poster came from the staff or from the public suggestion box.
Yes. The world is MAD, MAD, MAD.
