16 APRIL 2006.- RAIN, RAIN AND RAIN

"Apocalypto" has been bumped from an August 4th release to December 8th.
A spokesman for Disney, which is releasing the film, says the production had fallen behind because of heavy rains in the wilds of Mexico, where Gibson is shooting.

Our reporter in the area

CHEER UP!. That gives "Apocalypto" great potential as an Oscar contender.

19 APRIL 2006.- RAIN, RAIN AND RAIN II

IT IS SAID THAT: "Uma forte tempestade atingiu o set de filmagens do filme Apocalypto, dirigido pelo ator Mel Gibson. Os estragos da tempestade acabaram destruindo alguns equipamentos essenciais da filmagem e parte da cenografia. Católico, Mel Gibson não se abalou com o fato e pediu que reconstruíssem o quanto antes as partes afetadas do set."

26 APRIL 2006.- THE PLOT OF APOCALYPTO

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!

We´ve just found the following information.
"Writer Luke Dittrich offers a plot synopsis of Apocalypto on page 104 of the current Esquire magazine. According to Dittrich, the main character, named Jaguar Paw, is a Mayan prince who lives in a peaceful village. Mayans from a less peaceful but more powerful tribe invade Jaguar's village … raping, pillaging, burning. They kill many of Jaguar's friends and family and take others, including his pregnant wife, prisoner. The prisoners are hauled off to a city of massive pyramids, where they are to become sacrificial fodder. Jaguar Paw organizes the remnants of his tribe and trains them in the art of war with the intent of wreaking vengeance and liberating their people."

8 MAY 2006.- "APOCALYPTO", OSCAR CONTENDER.

The team of linguists in Burbank right now working on how to say ''for your consideration'' in Yucatec Maya.

Article published by "ET Weekly Magazine".

"The strange story behind Mel Gibson's post-''Passion'' project."

Last time the world saw The Passion of the Christ mastermind Mel Gibson, he was promoting his mystery-shrouded spectacle, Apocalypto, on the Academy Awards. Standing with limestone-powder-coated extras from the Mayan-language epic, he delivered a verbose explanation in Yucatec Maya for why he wouldn't be hosting the show. The English subtitle read simply, ''Not me.''
Gibson's witty turn may have stoked anticipation for the movie's August release, but now, just two months later, Disney has shifted the opening to Dec. 8. That move puts the film - which has been shooting for a Werner Herzog-ian six months in a remote Mexican jungle - in a slot normally reserved for blockbusters and big-time Oscar contenders.
So will Apocalypto deliver the goods? Gibson, 50, is keeping the plot details secret, but here's what we know: The story takes place in the late 15th century. Village leaders bent on human sacrifice take Apocalypto's hero, Jaguar Paw (played by newcomer Rudy Youngblood), from his wife and child. He escapes and is chased through the jungle, setting off on a quest for justice and a reunion with his family that features action, a healthy amount of gore, and, of course, subtitles.
If that sounds like a Braveheart-style winning formula - and sources certainly enthuse over early footage - a few questions still linger over the project. The Passion may have grossed $612 million worldwide, but it also sparked a controversy that tarnished Gibson's image in some Hollywood circles; and it's unclear whether a bloody Mayan epic will represent a reengagement with the film community or a walk farther out on a limb. Then there are the mounting delays. According to people close to the production, the director has lost significant time to the inexperience of his cast, the bulk of whom he found in Mexico.
There's at least one party that doesn't seem worried: Disney. The studio remains upbeat about the project, which reportedly costs less than $50 million. ''Mel showed us footage that blew us away,'' says Oren Aviv, Disney's chief creative officer, who traveled to the set in March. ''Apocalypto has the chance to get critical recognition.'' In other words, there's a team of linguists in Burbank right now working on how to say ''for your consideration'' in Yucatec Maya."

SEVEN NOMINATIONS, FIVE OSCARS. Just Wait!

9 MAY 2006.- APOCALYPTO, ON THE SET

We´ve received the following information from an anonymous witness. According to "CL", last Fryday Mr. Gibson danced the "CUMBIA" with the extras on the set. He is also a great joker who loves giving spontaneous parties.

11 MAY 2006.- "PEACE OUT"

USA Network has joined forces with Mel Gibson's production company to develop an Iraq war drama, the cable channel said Tuesday.
"Peace Out", from Gibson's Icon Prods. banner, is envisioned as a six-hour series that tells a fact-based story of two young American men who head out for adventure in Iraq after the fall of Baghdad.
The announcement was made during USA's "upfront" presentation to advertisers.

14 MAY 2006.-GIBSON AND BUSH

Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.
The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.
Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.
He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".
We had already read this info last March (Time Magazine) So there´s nothing new about this subject.

16 MAY 2006.- MEL GIBSON AMONG 50 RICHEST LOS ANGELES MEDIA MOGULS

Viacom chief Sumner Redstone, director Steven Spielberg and actor Mel Gibson are among the 50 wealthiest persons in Los Angeles, a local business paper said.
Redstone, 82, with 7.4 billion dollars came in second among the "Top 50" largest fortunes in the Southern California megalopolis, after investor Kirk Kerkorian, 88, at the top of the list with 9.3 billion, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal.
David Geffen, a producer who co-founded the DreamWorks studio with Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg, was in seventh place with 4.2 billion dollars.
Spielberg is the top director on the list, at 14th, with 2.8 billion dollars, while Roy Disney, the nephew and heir of Walt Disney, earned 34th place with 1.2 billion dollars. Katzenberg, a former head of Disney, is 46th with 859 million.
Gibson, who produced and directed the blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ," took the 47th spot with 850 million dollars, making him the top actor on the list.
In fifth place, with 4.8 billion dollars, is Jeffrey Skoll, former chief executive of online auction site, eBay, of which he still owns six percent. Skoll, 41, is one of the youngest on the list and was producer of "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "Syriana."

18 MAY 2006.- GIBSON IN INDIA ????

According to The Times Of India, Hollywood actors Mel Gibson and Colin Farrell will be in Mumbai this August.
The duo will be in the city to shoot for Terrence Mallick's film Tree of Life, being coproduced by Shailendra Singh. Confirming the reports, Singh said, "Colin, Mel and Terrence will be down here in August. They will shoot the remaining segment of the Tree of Life in Mumbai." So, is Mel a part of the film as well? "Yes, but he's doing the film more for being a dear friend of Mallick, than for the film itself. He has an interesting part," informs Singh. "Most of the film is complete and about 15 per cent of the film will be shot here. That'll be the last leg of our shoot," he adds.

20 MAY 2006.- HOMES TO 500 FAMILIES

President of the Rotary Club, Frank Devlyn, informed that the million dollars donated by Mel Gibson to the victims of hurricanes Stan and Wilma in Mexico, will be spent on the construction of houses.
In press conference, he explained that Mr. Gibson's donation has not yet been employed because the project is still in its initial phase.
Their objective is to give homes to 500 families who lost everything in the states of Chiapas and Veracruz.
The Rotarians are also trying to obtain the financial support of local governments and the cooperation of beneficiaries in order to improve the quality of buildings. They would like to equip the new houses with refrigerator, stove and washing machine.

Local authorities have committed themselves to supply the zone with the necessary health centres and schools.
As well, William B. Boyd, world-wide president of Rotary Club, commented that they hope the project will be ready in three months.

21 MAY 2006.- HANKS AND GIBSON

According to OttawaSun.com, the long-time friendship between Mel Gibson and Tom Hanks has been hurt by the Da Vinci Code movie.
Sources say there's a holy war between them because Catholic Mel deems Tom's role in the movie blasphemous.
Gibson, who made the highly successful The Passion of the Christ, considers the fictional theory that Christ didn't die on the cross and married Mary Magdalene with whom he fathered a child, outrageous.
While he's not making his feelings public because he doesn't want to add to the film's buzz, Mel's said to have complained privately to Tom -- with the two stars arguing bitterly about the merits of the project.
Mel claims it's damaging to all Christianity because many people will believe the film is based on fact, not Dan Brown's bestselling novel. Tom's view is that Mel is taking the entire matter "far too seriously."
Psst!, Psst! We agree with Mr. Gibson but we don´t want to make our opinion public so NO COMMENT.

22 MAY 2006.- "MEL AND THE CODE", AGAIN

WE´VE JUST READ.
Catholic actor MEL GIBSON has slammed THE DA VINCI CODE book and movie for attacking the beliefs that he holds so sacred. But THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST director has been outraged with the thriller's controversial plot concerning JESUS CHRIST and MARY MAGDALENE. Gibson tells, "What worries me is that people will take this as fact. I'm not angry, per se, that it refutes everything I hold sacred, the foundations of my beliefs. The Da Vinci Code is an admitted work of fiction but it cleverly weaves fact into maverick theories in a way that will appear plausible to some." The angry star was actually the first choice of DR ROBERT LOMAS' (the intellectual who inspired the ROBERT LANGDON character) to play him, not TOM HANKS. Lomas says, "In an ideal world I'd quite like to have been played by Mel Gibson. I keep thinking of Braveheart and I think my wife and I would be happy with him."
By the way, "The Da Vinci Code" has grossed more than 224 million dollars at box office in 2 days.

28 MAY 2006.-UFFIZI´S NIOBE ROOM RESTORED

One of the Uffizi Gallery's finest rooms and its most striking sculptoral group have been restored thanks to an American foundation whose donors include Sting and Mel Gibson.
Its centerpiece, the statues of tragic mythical mother Niobe and her doomed family the Niobids, found in Rome in 1583, is "the most astounding group of classical staturary in the Uffizi." said Florence artistic superintendent Antonio Paolucci .
The restorations, made possible by a 300,000-euro grant from the Friends of Florence, gave experts their first-ever chance to conduct exhaustive studies of each statue, which would be "invaluable for future research," restorers said. For the first time, for instance, they were able to discover traces of another figure attached to Niobe s oldest son, thus confirming that originally it was a group of two joined figures" .

The newly refurbished room and its freshly resplendent contents were presented to the press this week at a ceremony attended by US Ambassador to Italy Ronald Spogli, who called the foundation's work "a prime example of excellent collaboration between our two countries". Since its inception in 1998, the foundation of Florence-lovers headed by American-born Florentine businesswoman Simonetta Brandolini d'Adda has spent lavishly on several projects including Michelangelo s David, Benvenuto Cellini's Perseus and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabines in the Loggia della Signoria, and, most recently, Lorenzo Ghiberti s Doors of Paradise on Florence's Baptistry .
The Friends of Florence foundation brings together wealthy US art buffs and some of the cream of Florentine society .
Its advisory members include Zubin Mehta, Sting, Mel Gibson and Franco Zeffirelli.

28 MAYO 2006.- ANECDOTE, BEHIND THE CAMERAS

Some weeks ago, an extra of "Apocalypto" was seriously injured when he tried to trespass a private property.
The guy, suffering from the effects of drugs and too much alcohol, almost died of electrocution. He was quickly hospitalized. Members of film production visited the injured and assured that the trespasser was a good healthy boy.

6 JUNE 2006.- "PEACE OUT"

Hard partying college students Jeff Neumann and Ray LeMoine went to Iraq in January 2004 on a whim and ended up in charge of the U.S. effort to coordinate humanitarian assistance to Iraqi aid groups.
Through their volunteer work they became close friends with dozens of soldiers, contractors, journalists and Iraqis.
They spent four months in Baghda. Even so, their jobs gave them a ground-level view and unique insight into the American occupation of Iraq and many of its shortcomings.
They left Iraq on April 4, 2004, after an American official warned them that insurgents had infiltrated the weekly meetings they held with Iraqi aid groups and they were in danger. That same day, violence had erupted in Fallujah and Sadr City and thousands of supporters of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr protested in the streets of Baghdad.

That fall, LeMoine went back to school in New York. There, journalists he'd met in Iraq invited him for drinks.
"These people put it in perspective that Jeff and I were unique characters over there," LeMoine said of the encounter with, among others, John Lee Anderson, a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine. "Somebody else just realized that our story was one of the best stories to come out of Iraq.
Before long, offers started coming in.
First came a story about the pair in GQ magazine.
Then, in December 2004, they were interviewed for a segment on the public radio show "This American Life."
Soon they had an agent. And a call came from Hollywood. Actor-director Mel Gibson was interested in their story. They flew to California and spent eight hours with Gibson and a handful of other film and television industry executives. They signed a deal that resulted in "Peace Out," a limited-run TV series based on their story.
Not long after their Hollywood visit, they sold their book rights. "Babylon by Bus," published by Penguin Press, is scheduled for release in August.

9 JUNE 2006.- THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST II.

Sony Pictures' Screen Gems division is working on a film that continues the story of Jesus following the events in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. The Resurrection will tell the story of Jesus Christ beginning the day he died on the cross and ending about 40 days later with his ascension into heaven.
The script is written by TV-movie scribe Lionel Chetwynd and is being produced by Reverend Tim LaHaye, co-author of the Left Behind books.
Since this isn't a real sequel (the first was released by Newmarket Films), it is doubtful that James Caviezel will be back.
Sony's Screen Gems is planning to bring The Resurrection to the big screen for an Easter 2007 release.

10 JUNE 2006.- APOCALYPTO SAYS GOODBYE TO MEXICO

Mel Gibson is just putting the finishing touches to "Apocalypto".
The shoot will end in a few days.
According to Miguel Angel Galvan, "the movie has a great chance of Oscar success. Technical Oscars and Best Director are a safe best.".
It´s a pity that the language makes impossible Best Picture nomination.

11 JUNE 2006.- THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL FILM

Entertainment Weekly has ranked the 25 most controversial films of all time in its June 16 issue.
Topping the list is Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ."
Entertainment Weekly writes that Gibson's depiction of Jesus' crucifixion ignited "a culture-war firestorm unrivaled in Hollywood history."
Though this film grossed over $370 million at the U.S. box office.
Coming in second is Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange." Kubrick's 1971 futuristic film was famous for a violent scene during which "Singin' in the Rain" plays on the soundtrack. Reports of copycat crimes led to the movie's withdrawal from distribution in Britain.
Oliver Stone has the unique distinction of landing twice on the list: 1991's "JFK" ranked at No. 5, and 1994's "Natural Born Killers" at No. 8.
"The Da Vinci Code," now in theaters, charts at No. 13 for the debates spawned by its tale of a Catholic cover-up. Another recent film, "United 93," ranks at No. 16 because of concerns that it came too soon after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Also among the 25: "Fahrenheit 9/11," "Deep Throat," "The Last Temptation of Christ," "The Deer Hunter," "Basic Instinct," "Do the Right Thing" and "Kids."

13 JUNE 2006.- MEL SELLS MANSION

Mr. Gibson talking about his horrible headaches because of Spears

Actor Mel Gibson is selling his Malibu mansion because he is sick of the commotion caused by his neighbour Britney Spears.
According to hollywood.com, Gibson lives next to Spears and has put up his $18 million mansion for sale. Spears has been visited by police a few times and has fans and paparazzi following her everywhere.
A source says: 'People are always hanging around outside the gates and he is worried his kids might get hurt.'
Gibson is moving to a new home in Santa Monica with his wife and children.
The Gibsons' new home is set to be a 4ha ranch in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is also closer to the church he has built. The new home has seven bedrooms.

15 JUNE 2006.- APOCALYPTO IN "LAS GRANJAS"

According to D. Próspero Rebolledo Ramírez (and this gentleman really knows what he's talking about), the shoot of Apocalypto, produced and directed by Mel Gibson, will end next July, around the second week. The last location will be Las Granjas, municipality near Boca del Rio.
Mel Gibson has been shooting Apocalypto since November (2005). Due to unforseen circumstances (rain, rain and rain + heavy storm) the initial plans had to be modified. In short: a delay of up two months. Then the post-production and the movie will be ready to be released next December in USA.
The production has received a great deal of criticism from the authorities of Yucatan. They are very peeved because Apocalypto has been shot on locations in Veracruz instead of the Yucatan Peninsula, where mayan culture has its roots.

17 JUNE 2006.- MAGAZINE FORBES. UNFAIR, VERY UNFAIR

Actor Tom Cruise has been crowned the world's most powerful celebrity for the second time by US magazine Forbes.
Cruise, the only film star to make the top 10, first topped the business publication's annual rundown in 2001. He came 10th last year.
The Rolling Stones are second, with chat show host Oprah Winfrey - last year's number one - in third place.
British talent makes a strong showing, with Sir Paul McCartney at 14, Sir Elton John at 16 and Harry Potter author JK Rowling at 19.
The global success of The Da Vinci Code, meanwhile, is reflected in author Dan Brown's presence in 10th position.
American Idol judge Simon Cowell makes his first appearance in the chart at number 29, while actor Brad Pitt comes in at 20. In a curious coincidence, Pitt's former wife Jennifer Aniston and his current partner Angelina Jolie are joint 35th.
But Mel Gibson and Madonna, rated third and eighth in 2005, are nowhere to be found in this year's top 100.

20 JUNE 2007.- "I´M YOUR MAN", AN IMPRESSIVE SOUNDTRACK

An impressive soundtrack is set to accompany the Leonard Cohen big screen documentary, I'm Your Man.
The Mel Gibson-produced film is set to open in select theatres on June 21, while the soundtrack will be released by Verve Forecast on July 25.
A majority of the performances were culled from a January 2005 tribute concert for Cohen produced by Hal Willner (Lost In The Stars, Stay Awake) in Sydney, Australia.
Here are the artists and songs on I'm Your Man:
  • Nick Cave - "I'm Your Man"
  • Rufus Wainwright - "Chelsea Hotel No. 2"
  • Rufus Wainwright - "Everybody Knows"
  • Laurie Anderson - "The Guests"
  • Antony - "If It Be Your Will"
  • Beth Orton - "Sisters Of Mercy"
  • Teddy Thompson - "The Future"
  • Kate and Anna McGarrigle - "Winter Lady"
  • Martha Wainwright - "The Traitor'
  • The Handsome Family - "Famous Blue Raincoat"
  • Nick Cave - -"Suzanne"
  • Perla Batalla - "Bird On A Wire"
  • Jarvis Cocker - "I Can't Forget"
  • Linda Thompson - "Alexandra Leaving"
  • Teddy Thompson - "Tonight Will Be Fine"
  • Leonard Cohen and U2 - "Tower Of Song"

22 JUNE 2006.- SEAN P. BROSNAN, A RUMOUR?

There are rumours that Sean B Brosnan - Pierce Brosnan's son by his first wife Cassandra Harris, who died in 1991-. is working on a new Mel Gibson film. "That's kind of a rumour really," he says, "I can't really say anything about that at the moment." Might it be something he will be involved with in the future? "Possibly, yes."
What is it called? "It's called Connected." And what's it about? "It's basically science fiction... It's kind of, er... Argh! You see? You're getting it out of me now! It's about the Nephilim - half-angels half-humans - which are actually in the Bible. Fallen angels come and fornicate with human women and they have offspring which are half-angel, half-human, and in the film they're still walking the world today."

23 JUNE 2006.- NEW IN THEATERS, Who Killed the Electric Car?

Director: Chris Paine. With Phyllis Diller, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, (92 min.)
In 1990 General Motors rolled out an electric concept car. Later that year California mandated that automakers sell a percentage of emissions-free vehicles there. Hello, future? Six years later the concept car had evolved into the stylish, well-engineered EV1 - but the legislation was being dismantled, and GM rather eagerly threw production into reverse. By 2003 the automaker announced it would yank back all leased EV1s from early adopters, who loved the cars despite some limitations, and within a couple of years the fleet had been "recycled." Ex-lessee Chris Paine's activist documentary might have been a shrill assault on the usual suspects. Instead he delivers a provocative exploration of competing interests - each articulately voiced - and of broad consumer indifference.
Two tracks by Meeky Rosie have been chosen alongside artists such as Moby on this film, which features Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson. " Who Killed the Electric Car?" was previewed at the Sundance and Tribeca film festivals and goes on release in the US this week.

24 JUNE 2006.- ADOPTION OF DIGITAL CINEMATOGRAPHY

Digital cinematography is winning the race.
With more cinematographers going digital on high-profile studio projects, industry insiders predict that film purists might soon become a thing of the past.
Adoption of digital cinematography is "happening kind of like the way wind erosion happens: slowly," says David Stump, a member of the American Society of Cinematographers' technology committee.
That is one of the reasons even more upcoming films are being shot digitally, including Paramount's planned November release "Zodiac," from filmmaker David Fincher; Buena Vista's planned December release "Apocalypto," directed by Mel Gibson; MGM's planned December release "Home of the Brave," helmed by Irwin Winkler, and even Francis Ford Coppola's next project, "Youth Without Youth."
Speaking from the "Apocalypto" set in Mexico, cinematographer Dean Semler notes that he has been struck by the absence of blur in the foreground of his digital shots. With a Panavision Genesis camera suspended on a cable, he says, "we were moving it at running speed with our actors, tracking them through the jungle from about 20 feet away, and you'd see branches and bushes and leaves with highlights on them, streaking by in the foreground. The results were extraordinary -- these stunning images of speed."
Semler also appreciated the ability to shoot for longer stretches -- about 50 minutes -- without having to reload the camera while working on the Adam Sandler starrer "Click." "We shot for 20 or 30 minutes at a go on 'Click,'" Semler says. "It allows actors to keep 'in the moment' and allows directors to try alternatives without calling, 'Cut!' and breaking the flow. We'd change tapes maybe twice a day."
According to Beebe, winner of an Academy Award for 2005's "Memoirs of a Geisha, "It's going to be up to the filmmakers. Filmmakers are going to look at these new projects , and if they're excited by what they see on the screens, that's going to be what determines their interest in digital cinematography."

29 JUNE 2006.-APOCALYPTO

We´ve extracted some passages from an extense article from USATODAY.com, "Apocalypto now for Mel, Maya and historians"
According to his author, Dan Vergano, archaeologists and experts on the ancient Maya "worry that once again a movie may sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of a good story ". They also disagree with some of the theories concerning mass sacrifice on which Gibson´s movie is supposedly based.
Maybe these gentlemen ought to pay attention to Mayra Sérbulo´s words: "People do have to remember that this is action fiction, not a Maya documentary. But I'm frankly surprised and excited about the care they're taking to portray indigenous Mexicans.", or Richard Hansen´s opinion (head of the Mirador Basin Project and a consultant for Apocalypto): "This is by far the best treatment--the first treatment really--of the Maya any film has ever done. I'm amazed at the detail Mel's shooting for."

-------------------------

"Mel Gibson is quietly filming a movie in a Mexican jungle about the collapsed civilization.
Experts on the ancient Maya are looking forward to Mel Gibson´s upcoming epic, Apocalypto, with a mixture of curiosity and dread. They're pleased that Hollywood will feature a period of world history still little understood but worry that once again a movie may sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of a good story.
"A lot depends on how well they depict the Maya. It may serve as a really good springboard into a lecture," says archaeologist Lisa Lucero of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. "Or it may be something we have to nip in the bud in that first lecture."
Gibson wasn't available for comment, and the public relations firm for his Icon Productions declined to offer any details on the film's plot.
But according to the film's website and another description of the plot in Time magazine's March preview, a ruler orders the mass sacrifice of hapless captives to appease the gods and avert a drought.
The only problem, and big cause for worry among archaeologists, is "the classic Maya really didn't go in for mass sacrifice," Lucero says. "That was the Aztecs." Other concerns: the modern-day Mayan Yucatec language spoken in the film is not the language of the ancient Maya, and the film's Mexican shooting locale is not the classic Maya homeland, says Penn State archaeologist David Webster.
Gibson's Icon Productions declined to comment on archaeologists' concerns through its Los Angeles public relations firm, Rogers & Cowan…
Gibson has consulted on the film with archaeologist Richard Hansen, head of the Mirador Basin Project in northern Guatemala, a forest reserve home to a number of Maya archaeological sites. Hansen also declined to comment, other than to say that project findings played a role in the film.
The classic Maya culture's history lasted for more than 1,000 years, ending around A.D. 850 with the collapse of the use of ceremonial centers in what are now parts of Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
Scholars still disagree over the extent to which war, drought or general political failure led to the collapse.
By focusing on the role of mass sacrifice, Apocalypto seems poised to insert its own vision into this area of scholarly disagreement, says Lucero. The lack of signs of warfare at the sites she has studied, and many others, points more toward a political collapse of the classic Maya, she concludes. "People voted with their feet," she says, moving back into the jungle or northward in a time of drought and political upheaval, when rulers lacking water couldn't compel farmers to visit their centers.
Focusing only on certain aspects of the Maya collapse such as violence or ecological disasters may create the incorrect impression that it was a simple process or that it was caused by a single factor, says archaeologist Tomas Barrientos of Guatemala's Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, by e-mail. Other scholars are just looking forward to seeing how the movie turns out."

3 JULY 2006.- ABOUT APOCALYPTO

  • According to mexican newspapers, the shoot of Apocalypto will conclude in a couple of weeks. Now, they´re filming in Boca del Rio, where a cenote has been recreated. Then the production move to Catemaco, where the second unit has to film some new shots in the rain forest. Probably, Mel Gibson will not be present.
Now, Mel Gibson spends the weekends in USA, where he´s working on the postproduction.
Few details are known about the plot, just the names of some characters, but there are rumours that talk about a long hunt of a wild board through the forest. They say that this action scene is one of the initial sequences of the movie. A robot, a boar and a pony have been the "stars".
Apparently the pyramids donated by Mel Gibson have an uncertain future. They are threatened witn complete extinction because of bureaucracy.Mexican authorities have to make a decision before August. The problem: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY.

  • Esmeralda García Nevárez has been fotunate enough to be one of the high professionals who have been in charge of make-up effects.
She affirms that she has enjoyed the experience very much. Esmeralda describes Mr. Gibson as a great boss, "a noble and generous person. He´s very funny but he dislikes interviews and photos. He said that he was not the star, just the director of the movie. But I got his PHOTO. He usually asked us about technical aspects of our work and he did not hesitate to praise us for what we were doing."

And HAPPY 4th JULY !!!.

7 JULY 2006.- APOCALYPTO

The following article has been published by Channel 4 News, UK.
----------------------------------------

Mel Gibson follows The Passion Of The Christ with an epic drama about the fall of the Mayan civilisation. Performed in the ancient Mayan language, Gibson claims it's designed to elevate audiences to a higher plane
"Grizzly Adams here," chortles Mel Gibson from a cinema screen, referring to his alarmingly bushy, white-streaked beard. Recorded especially for Cinema Days, the Film Distribution Association's tri-annual event for UK film journalists, Gibson's statement precedes the first screening of a new trailer for his latest directorial work, Apocalypto.
Due for release in December, the film is set during the final days of the ancient Mayan civilisation in Mexico before the European conquests of the 16th century. Apocalypto is another eccentric project from Gibson, the man who earned over $600 million for a film Hollywood insisted nobody would want to see: The Passion Of The Christ.
As he proved with his Biblical epic, Gibson is a man unafraid to cut his own path. In his filmed statement, he says that Apocalypto is in "the ancient Mayan language and, yes," he smirks, "there will be subtitles."
But, he goes on to explain, the film will be light on dialogue and heavy on imagery and action. If the new footage shown in the trailer is anything to go by, those images look set to be striking. Invading warriors, bodies daubed in war paint, crash through the jungle, while a high priest in a feather head dress stands atop a pyramid to address his people. It looks promising, although it is unlikely it will perform at the box office - the Bible belters who block-booked The Passion are unlikely to turn up for what promises to be a violent tale about ancient pagans. Indeed, for Gibson, it appears an odd choice of movie.
"I was sitting in a room with a bottle of bourbon and a revolver," he jokes of the script-writing process, before adopting a more serious tack. "The summer's full of sequels and I truly believe there's a hunger for something different in the film arts."
Different Apocalypto certainly is. Not only does its pre-Cortez Mexican setting mean no box-office friendly European faces and everyone speaking in an extinct language, but his reasons for telling the story are typically lofty. The trailer features a quote from philosopher Will Durrant who, ironically considering Gibson's religious leanings, rejected Catholicism shortly before his death in 1981.
"A great civilisation is not conquered from without," runs the portentous quote, "until it has destroyed itself from within."
"I´m hoping by focusing on this civilisation we can analyze ourselves," Gibson says. "The film is kind of an anthropological journey. The Mayans are just fascinating to me. There's still a lot of mystery about the culture."
Of the film's title, a Greek word that means an unveiling or a new beginning, Gibson says, "It just expresses so well that I want to convey. It's just a universal word. In order for something to begin, something has to end. All of those elements are involved. But it's not a big doomsday picture or anything like that."
Finally, now in the full flush of wide-eyed enthusiasm, Gibson lays out his humble hopes for his picture. "It should," he says, "entertain, educate and lift the audience members to a higher plane."

7 JULY 2006.- MEL´S THINGS

Mel Gibson dislikes interviews, photos and QUESTIONNAIRES!!!

Who Killed the Electric Car?
A former GM EV-1 saleswoman explains how she had to draw up a résumé for actor Mel Gibson to prove he warranted being allowed to lease an EV-1. Gibson jokes about the questions he was asked.
"I was wondering, 'Why do I have to fill this out?' You had to tell them where your birthmarks were. It was everything. 'Have you recently had a proctoscope inserted into your -?' You had to get real specific about a whole bunch of things."
