In order to help those whose curiosity is killing them, we have added a new page: Stealing From Angels. The film that will be or will not be.

Stealing From Angels

12 MAY 2005.- JACKSON "MOST POWERFUL MAN IN HOLLYWOOD"

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has been named the most powerful person in Hollywood.
Premiere magazine's June issue says the 43-year-old New Zealand-born director is one of the few "one man band productions that are changing the grid of the power structure" in Tinseltown.
Producer-director Steve Spielberg is at No. 2 while Steve Jobs and John Lasseter, heads of Pixar animations company fell from last year's No. 1 spot to third.
Among the actors on the list are Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Will Smith and Johnny Depp.

20 MAY 2005.-MEL GIBSON, "BLESS THE CHILD" AND CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY

The Passion of the Christ marked Mel Gibson's bloodiest commentary on religion, but it wasn't his first. In 2000, Icon Productions, Gibson's production company, made Bless the Child, a pro-Christian movie replete with anti-Scientology references. Gibson's challenge to the Church of Scientology is the subject of an investigation in the current issue of Citizen Culture Magazine .
The article, entitled "Scientology's Night at the Movies," was written by editor-in-chief Jonathon Scott Feit, based on earlier research published in the Journal of Media and Religion. Feit writes that Bless the Child "resembles so closely the reality of events and perceptions surrounding the Church of Scientology that it seems to have been written, in everything but name, as an expose of Scientology's seedy internal operations."

Bless the Child, which was co-produced by Paramount Pictures and starred Kim Basinger, Jimmy Smits, Rufus Sewell and child prodigy Holliston Coleman, performed less successfully at the box office than The Passion of the Christ.
Feit writes that "Gibson's professional proximity -- and perhaps friendship -- to his colleagues of high grandeur [including noted Scientologists John Travolta, Tom Cruise, and others], not to mention the Hollywood political game, may explain the film's cryptic bludgeoning rather than outright deprecation of Scientology."
In Bless the Child, "The New Dawn" -- a fictionalized religion that borrows Scientology's symbols and rhetoric -- is ultimately defeated by Catholic believers. The film differs significantly from the novel of the same name, which emphasizes the power of faith as a hopeful force, but does not side with any particular religion.

21 MAY 2005.- THE SAVAGES SAY GOOD-BYE

At its annual upfront presentation last Tuesday in New York, the Alphabet net announced that it will add a dozen new series to its schedule next season--five comedies, six dramas and one reality series.
Missing from the network's schedule are 2005 midseason series Blind Justice with Ron Eldard and the Tim Daly drama Eyes, My Wife and Kids, 8 Simple Rules, along with the Mel Gibson-produced comedy Complete Savages . Gibson gave the show everything he'd got as executive producer and directed the first episode,. He also played "Officer Cox" in several episodes.

27 MAY 2005.- JANE GILCHRIST, A GREAT FAN OF MEL GIBSON.

Jane Gilchrist's meteoric rise to fame from Clevedon supermarket cashier to opera star is to be made into a feature film.
The 39-year-old shot to fame in 2003 when she appeared on Channel 4's Operatunity and was chosen from 2,500 hopefuls to sing with the English National Opera at London's Coliseum.
Since then, the mother-of-seven has recorded a CD with fellow contestant, Denise Leigh, with whom she shared the role of Gilda in the prestigious production, and released a solo album.
In addition, the former member of Clevedon's Gilbert and Sullivan Society has starred in countless concerts and been inundated by fan mail from as far afield as Australia.

Now Jane has revealed that Harbour Pictures, which produced the internationally-acclaimed blockbuster Calendar Girls, starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, is to make a film of her life story.
Jane said: "We've been negotiating with Harbour Pictures for the last 18 months and now the contract has been signed and a scriptwriter has been appointed. I will be telling him my life story, the script will take around nine months to write, then filming will begin in around a year's time."
When asked which actors she would like to appear in the film, Jane said: "I'd like to play myself and I'd like Mel Gibson to play my partner and manager, Paul Carroll, but I'm not too sure Paul is keen on that idea."

31 MAY 2005.- LIFE'S A BEACH FOR STAR SWELL GIBSON (FROM THE SUNDAY MAIL)

"LONDON.-MEL Gibson may have been voted one of the 50 most beautiful men in the world by People magazine - but he looked nothing like a Hollywood heart-throb when he hit the beach yesterday.
The Australian star - who won an army of female fans for his role in films such as Mad Max and Lethal Weapon - sported a flabby tum and greying beard as he sunbathed in Malibu.
His physique was a far cry from the toned muscles he showed off while wearing a kilt as Scots hero William Wallace in Braveheart.
Perhaps losing the battle with the bulge is the reason the star, 49, prefers being behind the camera directing rather than acting these days."
We´re not responsible for this terrible article. Complaints to SUNDAY MAIL, please.

7 JUNE 2005.- MEL, AS GENEROUS AS ALWAYS

Mel Gibson and his fellow Australian stars, Geoffrey Rush and Russell Crowe, help a Sydney theatre company.
The trio have donated $600,000 to a renovation fund for Sydney's Company B Belvoir St Theatre.

12 JUNE 2005.-MONICA BELLUCCI Vs. POPE BENEDICT XVI

The newly elected Pope Benedict XVI has become embroiled in an argument over fertility rights with the actress who played Mary Magdalen in Mel Gibson's controversial film, The Passion of the Christ.
Italians vote today in four emotionally charged referendums on fertility treatment and embryo research, and the Pope has thrown the full weight of his authority behind the campaign to stop the liberal reforms. He is backing a call by Italian bishops for all Catholics to abstain from voting. If less than 50 per cent of the electorate turns out, the proposed liberalisation will automatically fall.
One of the prominent members of the 'yes' camp is actress Monica Bellucci, who played Magdalen in The Passion of the Christ. Bellucci posed naked while heavily pregnant for a magazine shoot last year to draw attention to her stance on the issue.
She said: "If I asked a priest or a politician how my body is made, how my ovaries are made or how ovulation works, he wouldn't know what I was talking about. This is an issue for scientists and women."
The political climate in Italy has not been as tense over a moral issue since the 1970s, when the legalisation of divorce and abortion sparked bitter debates.
"It is no longer just a vote on artificial insemination. It is also a vote on the Church's power in Italian society," former ambassador Sergio Romano, a political analyst, wrote in Corriere della Sera.
Those in favour of change are seeking to repeal parts of the so-called 'Law 40', approved last year by the centre-right government of Silvio Berlusconi. It transformed Italy from the most liberal country in Europe on fertility treatments to one of the most restrictive.
The law restricts surrogacy and research using human embryos, forbids sperm and egg donation, and limits the number of embryos created with in vitro techniques to three.
It also limits fertility treatment to stable heterosexual couples and excludes single women and same-sex couples.
Women's groups, parliamentarians and other opponents succeeded in collecting four million signatures to have the most restrictive parts of the law put to a referendum.
The Pope entered the controversy by endorsing pleas by Italian bishops for a boycott of the referendum.
Last week he underlined his message with another uncompromising pronouncement in which he denounced the "pseudo-freedoms" of same-sex marriages and condemned "terminating or manipulating life".
A 'yes' vote would be a serious setback for Pope Benedict, who has said that defending the Church's stance against medically assisted procreation, abortion and stem cell research is a priority of his pontificate.
Although the votes take place over two days, turnout could decide the issue, especially as many Italians will be heading for the beaches. No referendum held in Italy since 1997 has achieved the necessary 50% turnout.

14 JUNE 2005.-VIN AND MEL

Hollywood hardman VIN DIESEL is preparing to star and direct a biopic of ancient warrior HANNIBAL - and he's been taking advice from MEL GIBSON on how to get his project into production.
Diesel has already undergone training to ride an Elephant - the animal Hannibal used to cross the Alps - to prepare himself for the demanding role.
And Gibson has passed on the knowledge he gained making BRAVEHEART - a film Hollywood studios were initially reluctant to finance - to help Diesel realise his dream.
Diesel tells EMPIRE magazine, "I've been location scouting. I've been elephant-training, I've had a four hour dinner with Mel Gibson, talking about Braveheart, to get prepped for this thing.
"Braveheart was another film no-one wanted to make - imagine going to a studio and saying, I want to do this $70 million movie about a guy running around in a skirt for three hours."

14 JUNE 2005.- A GREAT PAL

On the set of his new $55-million (U.S.) movie 16 Blocks, Richard Donner is clearly an old pro at filming hard-core action scenes, having commandeered Mel Gibson through countless close scrapes in the four Lethal Weapon films, as well as directing the late Christopher Reeve as the buff superhero in Superman I and II.
Often asked which projects rank among his favourites, he always offers the same reply: "Do you have any kids? Which one are you most proud of?" Having said that, Donner admits he has a soft spot for Ladyhawke, the medieval adventure tale starring Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer.
"And I love my Lethal Weapons. I love everything I've done with Mel Gibson."
Friends for more than 20 years, Donner says his pal has gotten a bad rap over the controversial The Passion of the Christ, a film about the final hours and crucifixion of Jesus.
"He is just a great, crazy, nutty son-of-a-bitch that I love dearly. He's the guy you want to hang with. He's the kind of buddy you want to have," Donner says of Gibson.

"I've known the man for two decades -- and I've known him through all sorts of his own demons in life that I experienced with him. And I've never heard him say anything bad about anybody. That's Mel. He's pure. Whatever he did with that film, it was something he had to do. If there were demons he had, he got them out. But no way in his mind was he anti-Semitic."
Donner has not seen The Passion, because Gibson told him not to. "He said it's so violent, and he knows I hate violence. If you've seen my movies, violence is always totally contained or it's comic-book violence. I can't do it if it's stark reality and document. So Mel said, 'Don't go. You'll hate me.' "
Donner wraps shooting 16 Blocks in Toronto on June 24.

18 JUNE 2005.-GIBSON IS HOLLYWOOD´S MOST POWERFUL CELEBRITY.

Mel Gibson has been dethroned from his perch as Forbes magazine's most powerful celebrity in the world, slipping two places to third in the latest list behind Oprah Winfrey and Tiger Woods. The Australian actor and film-maker remains the most influential star in Hollywood and one of the richest, following last year's hugely successful The Passion of the Christ. As a joint producer and significant rights holder on most of his films, Gibson recoups far more than he would as a director or actor.
The Forbes survey measures star power through a combination of earnings, column inches and internet presence. George Lucas finished fourth.

Meanwhile reports circulating this week have linked Gibson to Terrence Malick's next project, the drama Tree of Life.
According to HitList and Ain't It Cool News, Gibson is set to star alongside Colin Farrell and if it gets the go-ahead, the film will shoot partly in India and is estimated to cost approximately $145m (£79.4m).

18 JUNE 2005.-PERCEPT SIGNS MEL GIBSON ?.

Indian production house Percept Picture Company has reportedly signed Hollywood heavyweights Mel Gibson and Colin Farrell for its forthcoming production, "Tree Of Life".
The company is said to have been negotiating with the two artistes over the last five months and recently gave a nod for the proposal, reports Bollywood Trade.
The $145 million project, to be directed by Oscar-winner Terence Malik, will be extensively shot abroad, though 15 percent of the film will be shot in India.
Percept is now said to be looking at the option of roping in funding partners for the film, one of them being its regular partner the Sahara Group.

21 JUNE 2005.- TREE OF LIFE (HITLISTS)

Colin Farrell and Mel Gibson will star in the Terence Malik-directed Tree of Life. Mumbai-based production house Percept Picture Company is set to sign the $145 million deal within 24 hours
It looks like Indian cinema has finally made a dent in Hollywood. Indian production house Percept Picture Company is all set to be a part of India's first truly Hollywood film, titled Tree of Life.
An insider informs us that the film is a, "$145 million project and the company has been in negotiation for the last five months. It's all very hush-hush right now. Percept will break the news next week as right now solicitors on both sides are going over the Memorandum of Understanding."
Fifteen per cent of Tree of Life will be shot in India, while the rest will be shot on locations abroad. A source from Percept, who does not wish to be named, says, "This film will take India places in the Hollywood circles."
Not confirming the news, Shailendra Singh, managing director, Percept Picture Company says, "I cannot comment on this right now. When I have something to say, we will announce it officially."
Films Percept has made in the past :Makdee, Phir Milenge Mother Teresa and Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi
Our source tells us there are also talks to rope in Michael Douglas for the project. But it is not yet clear whether he will be a partner in production or will act in the film. Singh is flying out of the country to seal the deal with him next week.

21 JUNE 2005.- SENTENCE WAS POSTPONED

Sentencing was postponed Monday for an Idaho transient convicted of stalking actor/director Mel Gibson.
Zack Sinclair, who acted as his own attorney, was convicted March 4 of one felony stalking count for showing up at Gibson's Malibu property at least four times and at his church once last year, and for sending him a dozen letters containing religious references.
His sentencing has been rescheduled for Wednesday.
Sinclair began trying to make contact with Gibson after the actor-director released "The Passion of the Christ," his film about the last hours of Jesus.
When Sinclair was last at the Van Nuys courthouse March 10, he was ordered to undergo a 90-day evaluation by Department of Corrections mental health experts before being sentenced.
Superior Court Judge John S. Fisher has said he would be willing to consider secure treatment facilities appropriate for Fisher, now 35. The evaluation determines whether a defendant is suitable for state prison.
Deputy District Attorney Debra Archuleta told the judge at the earlier hearing that it was "not appropriate" for Sinclair to be placed with the general prison population.
Gibson testified during Sinclair's brief trial that the transient was a man who "doesn't appear to know his boundaries" and whose persistent actions worried his wife.
Sinclair was arrested last Sept. 20 after showing up unannounced at the Gibson estate. Before being released from jail on Oct. 6, he was served with a restraining order barring him from coming within 100 yards of the actor, his family, their home, Gibson's work sites, their children's school or their chapel, for three years.
Sinclair was arrested the following day on suspicion of stalking in violation of the order.
