1 JANUARY 2009.- AN OLD FRIEND

Scooter

Milenio.com  posts an interesting item about an old acquaintance of us, Scooter. Do you remember him?
He was paid 250,000 pesos for acting in the movie Apocalypto directed by Mel Gibson in 2005. He was treated as a star for a few days and then he returned to his home in Leon. As a sensible tapir, he invested his money in the building of a mansion for him and his future wife, but the days drifted into months and the months passed into years and the eagerly awaited plan of forming a family did not materialize because there was no wife for him, so the once star of "Apocalypto" continues living alone in his luxurious habitat at the zoo.
Scooter is a sad movie star, but despite his loneliness, he always displays warmth and sympathy toward others and never refuses to pose for the cameras of his fans (something he doubtless learned from his protector and friend, Mel Gibson). And while he and his keepers wait for a female tapir to assure the continuity of this endangered species, we invite you to send birthday wishes to Scooter as he will celebrate his 7th birthday on 31 January 2009.
Dear Scooter, We Love You!

4 JANUARY 2009.- BYE-BYE, PANAMA!!!
GREAT EXCLUSIVE !!!! Mel Gibson in the lobby at the Casita Margarita Hotel (There's nothing we wouldn't do for you, friends.)

Actor Mel Gibson finished his holiday, and returned to California on Thursday after spending four days in Panama.
As reported by the press last Monday, Gibson lodged in Casita Margarita Hotel, but this time he did not socialize with the local people, and in what appears to be an effort to elude paparazzi, Mel made himself quite *invisible*. "Mr. Gibson was hardly seen in town, took all his meals in his room and used the back door to enter and exit the hotel," said a close source.
According to Dia a Dia, Gibson, who was visiting his properties in the area, inquired about the average labor cost per man hour in Panama as he plans to build a summer mansion on the Azuero Peninsula.

8 JANUARY 2009.- HOTEL AND RESORT IN PANAMA
Source: www.panama-guide.com
Mel Gibson is spending some $12 million dollars on real estate along Panama's Pacific coast, specifically around the "Ensenada de Cativo." According to panama-guide, Gibson is using a real estate company called Panama Land Capital to put the deal together. The location of the land purchase was published by Templar Panama in promotional information to their clients. The deal supposedly is not completely done yet, in that there are actually some 78 parcels of land that have to be purchased in order to form the larger parcel Gibson will use to build a 300 room hotel and resort, but some two-thirds of the land has been acquired and the rest of the deals are in process. In fact Gibson is one shareholder of a larger consortium that's going to be working on this project in an area of Panama where land prices along the Pacific coast are still approachable.

Mel Gibson is growing his hair back, after his son dared him to shave himself bald.
The embarrassed actor was convinced a skinhead would be a good look for him, but it backfired badly.
Gibson, 53, tells the New York Post, "I thought it would be cool. That I'd be Shaft. Looking like I was a plucked chicken, the only perk was I wasn't recognised in a crowd."

10 JANUARY 2009.- AMHERST COLLEGE GIFT HELPS PROVIDE RIDES FOR HOMELESS
Source: www.amherstbulletin.com
Money earned by Amherst College from the filming of "Edge of Darkness" is helping Amherst's homeless population combat New England's freezing temperatures. The "EOD" rent money was handed over to fund a program offering free taxi service to homeless folks in the area and temporary lodging in a local motel.
With temperatures dipping well below freezing most recent nights, the town of Amherst, through its Community Development Department, has begun providing the free taxi service.
"Fundamentally, what we're doing is offering, to those homeless who notified our related social service agencies, a ride to the shelter in Northampton," said Town Manager Larry Shaffer. The town also used a portion of the money to rent rooms for homeless people last weekend at the Amherst Motel.
The money to pay for these rides and rooms comes from money donated to the town by Amherst College, which it collected from Gibson for use of its property for filming "Edge of Darkness."
The locations that Gibson used included the former Strategic Air Command bunker near the Notch off Route 116.
Amherst College donated $40,000 to divide equally among social services, with $10,000 to both the Senior Center and Community Development Department, and $20,000 to the schools.
Shaffer said the human service network is responsible for making homeless individuals aware of the service, through social workers at the Center for Human Development and Homeless Outreach and notifications at places where homeless people go, such as the Amherst Survival Center and Not Bread Alone.
Barb Craig, a counselor at the Interfaith Homeless Cot Shelter, said that with the recent cold weather, many homeless people are seeking the lodging at night.
"We are definitely filled to capacity," Craig said. "Sometimes when the temperature is dipping low, we're above and beyond capacity."
But Craig said not everyone can be guaranteed one of the 20 beds available, except those who are already established. When weather conditions are particularly harsh, the shelter has couches it makes available for the overflow.
The shelter opens each night at 6 p.m. and closes at 7 a.m. The shelter is open from Nov. 1 through April 30.
Other portions of the money given by Amherst College will be used to provide up to $300 in emergency fuel assistance and rental assistance for Amherst residents.

10 JANUARY 2009.- PROPOSED VOTING BOYCOTT IRKS SAG
Source: Variety
The Screen Actors Guild's battle over its strike authorization has taken an especially nasty turn, thanks to a suggested boycott of eight actors who are up for SAG awards.
The proposed boycott came to light after a significant number of SAG members received a pair of anonymous emails forwarded by national board member Frances Fisher. The two emails proposed that the SAG members withhold their award votes for the eight thesps because of their public support for the opposition to the authorization vote.
Nearly 2,000 SAG members -- including George Clooney and Tom Hanks -- have declared that they oppose the authorization due to the nation's current financial crisis.
In her email, Fisher said the letters were forwards and asked that her name and email be removed if the recipient chose to forward the letters. In a response issued Friday, former SAG president and current board member Richard Masur compared the anonymous email to a blacklist and called on Fisher to repudiate it.
The anonymous email singled out Josh Brolin (who was nominated for "Milk"), Kevin Spacey ("Recount"), Susan Sarandon ("Bernard & Doris"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter"), Sally Field ("Brothers and Sisters"), Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), Steve Carell ("The Office") and Tony Shalhoub ("Monk").
"If I were a regular, ordinary, not-rich-and-famous actor, and if I wanted my union to be strong so it could fight for me ... would I want to give any of these rich-and-famous UNION-UNDERMINERS my vote?" one of the anonymous emails said. "Would I want my union to give them such an honor -- MY UNION's ultimate stamp-of-approval? I would remember those names when I began to mark my ballot."
In his response, Masur said that there has never previously been an attempt to politicize the SAG Awards over its 15-year history.
"These awards were conceived of as an opportunity for actors to be honored by their peers," he added. "The sole criterion for the awarding of these honors has been artistic achievement. That must continue to be the case. The SAG Awards have meant a great deal to the members, the Guild and the SAG Foundation, as well as all the honorees. It would be a shame if this worthy process were to be sullied by this political manipulation."
Masur said Fisher should send out a message to everyone to whom she sent the email with an apology and a condemnation. "That would go a long way toward repairing he perception that she meant to support and encourage this kind of outrageous blacklisting," he added.
Fisher was not immediately available for comment.
The controversy comes with the guild's emergency national board meeting set for Monday and Tuesday to determine the fate of the proposed referendum. The SAG Awards will be held on Jan. 25.
SAG leaders have insisted that the authorization will give the guild more leverage in its long-stalled film and TV contract negotiations with Hollywood's majors. The vote had been set to be sent out Jan. 2 but after protests from SAG's New York board and other branches, SAG prexy Alan Rosenberg delayed the start of the three-week referendum process and skedded the board meeting to address the dissent and the call from the New York board for the negotiating committee to be replaced.
Supporters of the authorization have asserted repeatedly that the new-media terms of the congloms' final offer will lead to the eventual elimination of residuals -- a contention that's widely derided by the companies, noting that the DGA, WGA, AFTRA and IATSE have agreed to similar terms. SAG's web site currently lists 3,800 members who support the authorization including Mel Gibson, Holly Hunter and Martin Sheen.
