31 AUGUST 2008.- AMERICANIZED VERSION OF "EDGE OF DARKNESS"
Source: The Sunday Times (UK)
There's an interesting article in the weekend edition of The Sunday Times in the UK.
The piece talks about the Americanization of British entertainment staples like the remake of the 1985 BBC series "Edge of Darkness" currently being filmed in Boston (with production today in Winthrop, Mass.) and starring Mel Gibson.
Graham King, Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning financial backer of "The Departed," says he had to make a few changes in the Americanized version of "Edge of Darkness," which originally featured the late Bob Peck in the '80s.
According to King, the Massachusetts version will be less gloomy - a common negative used by American commissioning for television, along with “bad teeth” - but even grittier, says King who had to fix a few wrinkles in the new script.
“One character asks if it was time for a cup of tea,” King tells the Sunday Times. It seems there will be no tea in the American version.
"Not in Boston, where it was thrown overboard," the UK paper jokingly adds in reference to the events occurred on the night of December,16 1773 when a band of men disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded three British ships lying at anchor and dumped their tea cargo into the Boston Harbor.
King is putting £40m of his own company’s funds into Mel Gibson’s acting comeback. “No studio attached: yes, it keeps me awake at night,” affirms the producer.

2 SEPTEMBER 2008.- COURTESY VISITS
Australian tabloid Women's Day claims that Mel Gibson, currently in Boston filming "Edge of Darkness," has been spending "quality time" with an Eastern European musician known as Oksana.
The Aussie scandal sheet alleges that Gibson and the Russian beauty were romantically hanging out in the 52-year-old's roving trailer (recently in the South End, Roslindale and Chelsea).
Gibson's publicist slams the rumors saying that Oksana is "one of the artists on Mel's recording label Icon and is currently in the US recording a new album. She's a musician." Nevertheless, we bet that she was there for the catering. Boy - the food is usually amazing on American film sets!. You eat what the *stars* eat, so the quality and choice is fantastic, and better still it's free!. What could be better than that?

3 SEPTEMBER 2008.- ROBERT DE NIRO HIT THE 15th HOLE
Source: Boston Herald
Hollywood heavyweight Robert De Niro hit the 15th hole at the Gannon Golf Club in Lynn yesterday to shoot scenes for the Mel Gibson flick “Edge of Darkness.”
De Niro, who plays a CIA operative in the emotional thriller, spent the day trying to get out of a sand trap while the cameras rolled.
We hear that the director, Martin Campbell, of “Casino Royale” fame, was unable to fit the actor, the sand trap and the Boston skyline in his shot so the groundskeeping crew at Gannon spent the last week excavating the pit for the flick.
“They actually ended up liking the way it turned out, so they’re going to keep it,” said Someone Who Knows.
Gannon is open to the public today - but only holes 1 through 9: Bobby D. and the rest of the “Edge” crew have the back nine.

3 SEPTEMBER 2008.- THIS AND THAT
- Mel Gibson's recording label is called Icon Records.
Icon Productions was established in 1989. In the 90s Icon also launched a record label called Icon Records, with releases that included soundtracks to the Icon films, Anna Karenina, Fairy Tale: A True Story, 187, We Were Soldiers, What Women Want and The Passion of the Christ. Icon Records has a diverse catalogue of motion picture scores by composers that included James Horner, Alan Silvestri, and Stewart Copeland.
- It looks like actor Mel Gibson is buying up more of Malibu--it's rumored that he purchased the Malibu home of David Duchovny and Tea Leoni; the house hit the market in June for $12 million.

5 SEPTEMBER 2008.- BYE BYE, ROBERT DE NIRO!!!
Source: Variety
Robert De Niro has abruptly ankled "Edge of Darkness," the Martin Campbell-directed drama that Graham King's GK Films began shooting in Massachusetts on Aug. 18.
De Niro just arrived on the set this week.
"Sometimes things don't work out; it's called creative differences," explained a spokesman for the actor.
De Niro had signed to play an operative sent to clean up the evidence in the murder of a young woman. Mel Gibson stars as the victim's father, a homicide detective for the Boston Police Dept. who uncovers her secret life, a corporate cover-up and government collusion.
Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic also star.
The filmmakers plan to shoot around De Niro's character's scenes until they cast an actor to replace him.
Pic is based on a 1985 BBC miniseries that Campbell directed. William Monahan wrote the script. King, who financed the picture and received a SAG waiver to shoot it, is producing with Michael Wearing and the BBC.
Since starting Aug. 18, much of the filming had taken place in a warehouse in Chelsea. Today, the cast and crew are due to film on the Boston Common. With his departure, De Niro presumably will be able to spend more time promoting his new film, "Righteous Kill," out next week.

7 SEPTEMBER 2008.- THERE´S ALWAYS A FIRST TIME FOR EVEYTHING
Source: El País (Spain)
Interview (2005), Robert De Niro talks about film industry.
Business, circus of vanities, De Niro is holding back: "For people who are really creative the ego is very important. The ego is what sustains them, that´s why we should be lenient with them. I have not had problems of this kind, although I believe that we have to respect the artistic integrity of a performer and his decisions as an actor. But I have not gone through this experience because when I arrive on the film set, everything is signed and spoken. "
Knowing that when Mr. De Niro arrives on a film set "everything has been signed and spoken beforehand", restores the peace of mind of producers & Film directors.
