BIRD ON A WIRE (1990)

Plot.- Mel plays a former 1960s radical living a secret life as a government-protected witness after blowing the whistle on two corrupt drug-enforcement agents. Goldie is his former girlfriend who accidentally rediscovers him. So do the bad guys. They chase Mel and Goldie through a zoo.

Anecdotes.- Mel maintains a sense of humour about this film, which did well at the box office, "Bird on a Wire was one of my finest work. Oscar caliber."

AIR AMERICA (1990)

Plot.- Air America was the covert airline which the CIA ran out of Laos during the Vietnam War. Basically Air America would fly literally anything across the area if they thought it would combat the spread of Communism. Mel portrays an Air America pilot.

Anecdotes.- Danger lurked close to the set, since the area was under the control of an important drug dailer, Khun Sa, but fears over him were quelled where it emerged that Khun was a "Mad Max" fan, so Melīs autograph promoted peace for the duration of the shoot.

Anecdotes.- Once again, he tried to give up somoking so during shooting he replaced cigarettes with mouthfuls of nicotine chewing gum that he would only remove when actually speaking his lines.

Plot.- Roger Murtaugh in on the eve of his retirement from the police force, when he and Riggs are caught up in a plot involving a cop-turned-illegal firearms dealer.

Anecdotes.- Melīs company produced a Home Box Office documentary for TV on the making of Lethal Weapon 3, with the actor playing host and singing a dreadfully out-of-tune verson of "King in the Road".

FOREVER YOUNG (1994)

Plot.- Forever Young is the story of a heartbroken pilot (Gibson) who volunteers to undergo cryogenic freezing when his fiancée, injured in an accident, falls into coma. More than fifty years later, he is accidentally reawakened by a couple of young boys.

Anecdotes.- Forever Young featured Melīs naked rear, running through a building protected only by a childīs jacket. That provoked countless newspaper articles speculating on how much his nude bottom might add to the box office takings. The film made a fair amount at the box office- $35 million in the United States and $100 million worldwide. Because of Melīs bottom? I donīt know.

Plot.- Former teacher Justin McLeod, a recluse horribly disfigured in an accident, develops a special bond with a fatherless boy, to the suspicion of the familyīs boy and the townspeople who think the manīs motives may be less than fatherly.

Anecdotes.- Directing and acting in the movie sometimes became too much to bear, and Mel was rumored. to occasionally fall asleep in midsentence during shooting.

Anecdotes.- One of Melīs most enduring friendship started on the set of this picture. Mel and Jodie Foster (Annabelle) are very good friends.
