Even when aged just five, Mel loved to act the clown. He adored entertaining anyone who happened to be around with fake falls from scooters and bikes and by walking into doors and walls. He was a good disciple of his favourites The Three Stooges. Years later Mel has confessed *his crimes*. "When I was a kid, my brother Donal, who was two years younger than I, wasnīt as lucky. I actually did The Stooges things to him. Once, I said:' Hey, look at me and donīt close your eyes, no matter what I do'. He does it, Donal standing there with that childlike trust and reverence for his old brother.
And I poked him right in the eye. I mean, really a good one, fingers right in there, one that would make Moe proud. And heīs just in shock, moaning "Owwwww, owwww", holding his eye. By now, Iīm trying to quiet him, saying shut up, shut up, itīll be okay, but my mother picked up on what happened, and I get a nice whap under the jaw."



Melīs career as "a holy terror" improved at St. Leoīs College (Australia). St. Leoīs College was run by a group of Catholic priests. Inside St. Leoīs a spirit-crushing regime ruled and Mel spent a very rough time there. Mel became a troublemaker in the eyes of his teachers. Once, three boys including Mel devised a bizarre competition to see who could get the most strappings in one day from a maths teacher. Mel annoyed the teacher so much by copying his mannerism and mimicking his voice that he won easily.



After attending St. Leoīs College for a year, Mel was transferred to Asquith High School. There, Mel encountered the same sort of problems, but this time he decided to use new tactics. Mel was soon performing his stunts. This time the model for his pratfalls was the late, Peter Sellers. He moved very quickly towards a door and seemingly collided with it with a head -splintting sound, and then fell prostrate to the floor. Another, slightly more disturbing habit was Melīs very convincing impersonation of a headbutt. This trick was very successful. Some teachers were horrified and thought he was "a bit of a devil".

At Asquith, Mel acquired the nickname - Mad Mel.
