ONCE UPON A TIME there was a cast of "unknowns"....

JANUARY 2006.- Apocalypto is shrouded in mysteries. One of them is the cast. We've heard from different sources that some of the young actors and actresses have been recruited from the CUT in Veracruz.
Last October, Cretani (Director of CUT) said that the CUT (Centro Universitario de Teatro) was beginning to be a very attractive place visited regularly by talent scouts and casting directors, even international productions were showing a great interest in the School.
"Just last week two members of Mel Gibson's production team visited us. Mel Gibson is going to produce and direct Apocalypto. The film, in a Mayan dialect, will be shot on locations in Nanciyaga, Catemaco (Veracruz). Two of our students were hired. They have starring roles in the movie."
DALIA HERNANDEZ and GERARDO TARACENA were mentioned by the executive producer, Anna Roth, during a recent interview so we deduce that they are the students. But is Dalia the mysterious girl?. Impossible to know for certain.
Mauricio Amuy, a model and actor from Costa Rica, Joaquín Cosio, a famous Mexican theatre actor, Miguel Angel Galvan and Mel Gibson's fingernail complete our list for the moment.

THE FARCE

7 December 2006

The first trailer of APOCALYPTO (December 2005) was a farce. Some of the "stars" of this trailer, directed by Mel Gibson on November 2005, never acted in the film.
The trailer and its images were widely distributed and publicized.

These Images NEVER were part of the film. The famous teaser traler was just a promotional advert in which the real stars of "Apocalypto" didn´t participate.

THE STARS OF THE FARCE

7 December 2006

MAURICIO AMUY

Mauricio Amuy is 29 years old. He was born in Costa Rica but has Mexican nationality. It was thanks to a grant that he moved to North Carolina where he did a management course. In 1994 he started his career as a male model. Since then he has worked for Tommy Hilfiger, Prada, Levis jeans, Oscar de la Renta and Yves St. Laurent.
In 2004 he made a short appearance in "Spiderman 2". This role allowed him to join the American Actors´ Union. Other films are "Juwanna Mann" and "Apocalypto" in which he plays a Mayan chief. He has also been in famous TV series, such as "Sex in the city" and "Guiding Light".
For his work in support of needy children he was rewarded with the award "Celebrity with a Big Heart 2003".

Mauricio Amuy STARRED in the "TEASER TRAILER". He NEVER acted in APOCALYPTO. Amuy has given interviews here and there talking about his fascinating experience. Nobody (Disney, Gibson or Icon Productions) has refuted his affirmations.

MIGUEL ANGEL GALVAN

THANKS TO IAN FOR THE PHOTO AND INFORMATION.

Miguel Angel Galvan is an excellent Mexican actor. He started acting when he was 19 years old Miguel Angel has dedicated his life to the study and perfection of theatrical techniques. He has performed brilliantly the most important personages created by classical and contemporary theatrical authors. But he has also played in numerous TV shows and TV serials (Argos, TV Azteca or Televisa) and has appeared in several TV adverts.
He has worked in films such as "La Reina de la Noche" by Arturo Ripstein, "Mezcal", and "The Juror" by Brian Gibson. He has played a high-priest in Apocalypto.
Now Mr. Galvan is acting in "Edipo" by Sofocles and in "Intolerancia" (based on "Fin De Partida" by Samuel Beckett).
Miguel Angel Galvan is a lover of healthy life and he enjoys doing regular exercise in the open air.

Miguel Angel Galvan was the High Priest for a few days (See Trailer and Images, Dec.2005)

OUR THANKS TO MR. GALVAN AND MR. HOLLMANN FOR HIS HELP.

PRIESTS AND RITUALS

The role of priests was closely connected to the calendar and astronomy. Priests controlled learning and ritual, and were in charge of calculating time, festivals, ceremonies, fateful days and seasons, divination, events, cures for diseases, writing and genealogies. The Maya clergy were not celibate, and sons often succeeded fathers.
All Maya ritual acts were dictated by the 260-day Sacred Round calendar, and all performances had symbolic meaning. The elite were obsessed with blood - both their own and that of their captives - and ritual bloodletting was a major part of any important calendar event. Bloodletting was also carried out to nourish and propitiate the gods, and when Maya civilization began to fall, rulers with large territories are recorded as having rushed from one city to the other, performing bloodletting rites in order to maintain their disintegrating kingdoms.
For the Maya, blood sacrifice was necessary for the survival of both gods and people, sending human energy skyward and receiving divine power in return.
Human sacrifice was perpetrated on prisoners, slaves, and particularly children, with orphans and illegitimate children specially purchased for the occasion
Priests were assisted in human sacrifices by four older men who were known as chacs, in honour of the Rain God, Chac. These men would hold the arms and legs of a sacrificial victim while the chest was opened up by another individual called a nacom. Also in attendance was the chilam, a shaman figure who received messages from the gods while in a trance, and whose prophecies were interpreted by the assembled priests.

Cenotes exist all across the Yucatan peninsula in southern Mexico. They are sink holes in the limestone of the area that contain underground lakes. The Mayans believed these were gateways to the world of the gods. Accordingly they adopted the habit of sacrificing unfortunate individuals by chucking them in through the small openings in the ground that are the only sign of the cenote.
The Mayans did not think of this as a punishment, it was a privilege. This belief was confirmed by the fact the none of them ever returned. The fact that the person sacrificed promptly drowned in the underground lake did not seem to occur them as reason for them not returning.

MEL GIBSON´S FINGERNAIL

FEBRUARY 2006.- In 2005 during a press news Mel Gibson affirmed that a fingernail would be the only part of his body to be seen in the film. So here is it!. Mel Gibson´s index finger and nail, one of the candidates (in fact, they are ten) for the job.
By the way, Gibson made a short appearance in the teaser trailer but we think that it doesn´t count so we´re still waiting for the fingernail

MEL GIBSON´S FINGERNAIL

As soon as we´ve got new information on this subject, we´ll let you know as always.

THE GAME
7 December 2006
"In truth, we still believe kindness is not lost from the world"

From January to May, we tried to UNVEIL the cast of APOCALYPTO. Some persons helped us.
Our clearly define goal was to identify the female star of the film.

LATEST NEWS

CONFIRMATION OF OUR REPORT!!!!. This is the mexican Apocalypto cast: Gerardo Tarcena, Anmel Rodrigo, Marco Argueta, Dalia Hernández and Carlos Ramos. All actors students from CUT a drama school in México.
We thank Tutmes_3 for the information.
We´re very happy. Our list is growing!.

UNHAPPY FOREVER !!!!

4 February 2006, The Cast.- Chapter 1530

Trying to list the cast of Apocalypto is a one big headache !!!!!.
According to "DZ" (www.tuxtlas.com) the cast include some actors from Mexico City´s Centro Universitario de Teatro, a bunch of relatively unknowns: Rudy Youngblood, Rapol Trujillo, Gerardo Taracena (Taracena, Trasena or Tarcena ???) , Rodolfo Palacios, Jonathan Brewer, Iazua Larios and "our" stars: Mauricio Amuy, Joaquín Cosio and Miguel Angel Galvan. He says nothing about Mel Gibson´s fingernail but we fervently count on seeing it on the screen
"DZ" also narrates a curious anecdote. Apparently there are several tall Canadian of Maya origin in the cast, who speak Maya & English but not Spanish. We´re sure that Mr.Gibson will recommend Michael Thomas Spanish course to them.
About the extras, it seems the production needs thousands of them. For instance, the battle scenes at Paso de Ovejas apparently use up to 700 extras. Poor director!, we guess he will be aphonic for the rest of the year (maybe, for the rest of his life).

If the names of the actors, the extras and other people responsible for Apocalypto appear in the credit titles, we are LOST!!!!.
As far as we´re concerned, I can say that we´re on the verge of tears. I fear we'll never finish writing this damning list. God help us!

AND NOW, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN...

20 February 2006, The Cast.- Chapter 1532

As we´re bored to death, we´ve decided to expand our eternal investigation.
FIRST SUBJECT: RUDY YOUNGBLOOD.
According to DZ (www.tuxtlas.com), "Rudy Youngblood portrays the second leading man Jaguar Paw. He may be a native American dancer."
Yes, DZ is right as always. Rudy Youngblood is a native America dancer. We´ve visited his web site (www.rudyyoungblood.com) where we´ve found some interesting info.
"In October 2005, Rudy was cast as the lead in an Oscar winning director's next movie and immediately went on location in Mexico -- he is expected to be there until April 2006".
So we add his name to our immense list.

RUDY YOUNGBLOOD.- THE STAR

Rudy Youngblood, also known as Tee-Dee-Nae (which means "Strong Boy") is a gifted grass dancer, pow-wow singer and artist.
Rudy is of the Comanche, Cree and Yaqui people and was raised in Washington State, Texas and Arizona.
His work included two seasons in Peter Buffett's Spirit - The Seventh Fire as a key cast member. He has toured with the Native American Dance Theatre. Opening act opportunities have included the Philadelphia Phillies v. New York Mets, the musical sensation The String Cheese Incident, the original Navajo Code Talkers, a Purple Hearts Awards Ceremony and a presentation before General Colin Powell.
Rudy is a great athlete and a skilled horseman.
Rudy plays JAGUAR PAW in "Apocalypto".

"APOCALYPTO", RUDY YOUNGBLOOD

"As a dancer, I know how to tell a story with my eyes and my body, which is the kind of acting this film requires most, But I also have ancestors who fought at Wounded Knee and Little Big Horn, so it's not hard to use my Native American heritage for this role. Mel's been teaching me a lot about how to go back and find emotional things in my life and family to draw on."

"THE GIRL WITHOUT A NAME"

THE CANDIDATES:
  • KATE DEL CASTILLO
  • IAZUA LARIOS
  • DALIA HERNANDEZ

As we can´t find out the truth behind "The Girl Without a Name", we're going to summon these slippery young ladies. You're invited.

    Your invitation, please.

Welcome Ladies and gentlemen. Please, sit down around the table. (Our table holds a large oil lamp, which provided the room's only light and several small ornaments).

We're going to start the séance.
"Dear Miss Kate del Castillo, if you star in "Apocalypto", send us an e-mail!"
There's nothing but silence in the room. "Dear Miss Dalia Hernandez, if you star in "Apocalypto", send us an e-mail!"
    Silence again.
"Dear Miss Iazua Larios, if you star in "Apocalypto", send us an e-mail! ¡Mecachis!, que somos paisanos."
We don't hear rapping noises and the table doesn't spring to life but we still wait for a signal because we're very obstinate!
By the way, our slippery Iazua Larios participated in la Mostra de teatre de Barcelona Pervertimento 2005.

GERARDO TARACENA

We´ve found the pic below. We don´t know for sure whether this gentleman is our "Gerardo Taracena". We´re desperate. We wonder why Mexican actors and actresses are so reluctant to be photographed. We can imagine the scene quite clearly: a dishevelled Mr. Gibson and the cameraman pursuing them around the set. So if YOU, who are seeing this photo, can confirm the identity of this person, please e-mail us.

6 March 2006.- CONFIRMED!!!. This gentleman is Mexican actor Gerardo Taracena.

7 December 2006.- Taracena was born in and presently lives in Mexico City. He studied acting at the Centro Universitario de Teatro de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, and has performed in motion pictures, theatre and dance. SPECIAL GUEST.-THE TAPIR

Tapirs are large browsing animals, roughly pig-like in shape but with short, prehensile trunks. Size varies between species, but most are about 2 meters long, stand about a meter high at the shoulder, and weigh between 150 and 300 kg. The natural lifespan of a tapir is approximately 30 years, and a single youngster is born after a gestation of about 13 months. All baby tapirs have striped-and-spotted coats for camouflage, and while they appear at first glance to be alike, there are some differences among the patterns of different species.
Although tapirs were once widespread, only four species endured into the modern world: three in Central America and the warmer parts of South America, and one in Southeast Asia.

The Tapir (Scooter) became Gibson´s protégé. He presently lives in a Zoo (León, Mexico). Soon he will get married.

HUNTING AND HUNTERS

Meat is not often eaten by the Maya In ancient times there were few native animals that were appropriate for livestock. They would keep small, hairless dogs as pets and also to eat, as well as turkeys. Like most indigenous peoples of the Americas, the men hunted for game, such as birds, rabbits and deer. There were also monkeys and jaguars, but there is no indication that they were eaten. Some ancient paintings show Maya hunters using a blow gun and in their creation story the hero twins kill a giant bird with a blow gun. Lacandon Maya today use bows and arrows, but there is no indication of them in their ancient art, but spears ands knives are shown. These were tipped with sharpened stone, flint or obsidian, as the ancient Maya did not forge metal. Today the machete is a tool every Maya man uses with great skill.
