THIS AND THAT

  • THE GOVERNOR AND THE CLAPPER-BOARD

After filming for thirty-one days, last December 16th Mel Gibson received the Governor of the state, Fidel Herrera Beltrán, on the set.
Mr. Herrera fired the traditional opening shot. The governor thanked Mel Gibson and Disney Co. for their effort to promote the beauties of Catemaco. He also remarked Gibson´s solidarity. "Mr. Gibson is a great friend who helped us when the disaster struck the southeast of our country."
Mel decided to shave his beard. The famous beard was the object of admiration and controversy for three months. We´re going to miss it very much. Let it rest in peace.

"I´m the only gringo in this production."

  • THE CHOREOGRAPHER

Gregorio Tejo, professor of Dance at the University of Veracruz, has choreographed three pieces for APOCALYPTO.
One of these choreographies has already been filmed, the rest will be shot next February or March.
According to Mr. Tejo, "a positive experience". The choreographer and professor has pointed out the fact that in this field of art the film director always has the last word on these matters so, at the last moment and at Gibson´s request, a few modifications in the original Choreography were made in order to include some actors and extras in the dance.

  • THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

Ana Roth, executive producer of APOCALYPTO, unveiled two new names: GERARDO TRASENA and DALIA HERNANDEZ.
"Though there are not famous faces, all of them have great artistic talent", she said.

  • THE DIRECTOR

Everybody knows that directing a film is an exhausting process. One minute the director is patching a few holes, the next he´s behind the camera checking to see how the shot has come out but in his spare time, what does he do?.
Well, apparently, Mr. Gibson spends his free time playing cards (poker) and billiards at a typical cafe in Catemaco. Please, don´t worry, we´re sure they play for beans, matches or something like that as serious people always do.
MG is also enjoying the local cuisine. From the wide range of "specialities of the house" Mel usually chooses QUESADILLAS DE CARNE.
According to a witness, Mel Gibson has a good appetite and enjoys its food very much so he´s completely recovered from "the Montezuma´s Revenge".

MEL GIBSON AND THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE, D.FIDEL HERRERA BELTRAN, ON THE SET.

After a short break the production continues in Los Tuxtlas. Next February they'll move to Paso la Oveja where some pyramids have been built. One of them is about 30 metres high.

WE THANK D. JUAN VELASKO AND CINEWEB.com FOR THE INFO AND PICS.

  • 21 DECEMBER 2012

Rumors have started that the film will concern Mayan calendar predictions of what is called the "Fin de los Tiempos" (End of Time), when the sun and the center of the Milky Way Galaxy will be astronomically aligned. The cosmic cross formed by this aligment was called the Sacred Tree by the Maya. Mythically, the Sun - our Father - rises to conjoin the center of the Sacred Tree, the World Tree, the Tree of Life..
This rare astronomical event, foretold in the Mayan creation story of the Hero Twins will occur on 21 December 2012 when, according to the mayan disturbing prophecy, our world will end in fire and be reborn in a different, more evolved form.
The question is whether there´s a possible connection between this mith and the plot of Apocalypto.

BYE, BYE BEARD. HELLO AFTER-SHAVE.

THE MAYAS AND THE COSMOS

The ancient Maya believed in recurring cycles of creation and destruction and thought in terms of eras lasting about 5,200 modern years. The current cycle is believed by the Maya to have begun in either 3114 B.C. or 3113 B.C. of our calendar, and is expected to end in either A.D. 2011 or 2012.
They also believed Earth to be flat and four-cornered. Each corner was located at a cardinal point and had a colour value: red for east, white for north, black for west, and yellow for south. At the centre was the colour green.
Earth in its flat form was thought by the Maya to be the back of a giant crocodile, resting in a pool of water lilies. The crocodile's counterpart in the sky was a double-headed serpent - a concept probably based on the fact that the Maya word for "sky" is similar to the word for "snake".
Some Maya also thought that the sky was multi-layered and that it was supported at the corners by four gods of immense physical strength called "Bacabs". Other Maya believed that the sky was supported by four trees of different colours and species, with the green ceiba, or silk-cotton tree, at the centre.
Heaven was believed to have 13 layers, and each layer had its own god. Uppermost was the muan bird, a kind of screech-owl. The Underworld had nine layers, with nine corresponding Lords of the Night. The Underworld was a cold, unhappy place and was believed to be the destination of most Maya after death. Heavenly bodies such as the Sun, the Moon, and Venus, were also thought to pass through the Underworld after they disappeared below the horizon every evening.
