MEL GIBSON

"Someone asked me whether I would give my own life for anything, and I thought, would I?. But then I thought about my kids, and Iīd take a bullet for one of them. But theyīre the only people Iīd do it for."

Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born on January 3, 1956, in Peekskill, NY, USA as the sixth of eleven children to parents Hutton Gibson, a railroad brakeman, and Anna Gibson, who was born in Australia and died in December of 1990.
Though born in the US, Mel and his family moved to New South Wales (1968), Australia, after his father won as a "Jeopardy!" contestant, in part because he wanted to avoid having his sons drafted in the Vietnam War. After high school Mel studied at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, performing at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts alongside future film thespians Judy Davis and Steve Bisley. After college, Mel had a few stints on stage and starred in a few TV shows. Eventually, he was chosen to star in Mad Max (1979) and in a movie called Tim (1979) co-starring Piper Laurie. The small budgeted movie Mad Max (1979) made him known worldwide, while Tim (1979) garnered him an award for Best Actor from the Australian Film Institute. Later he would go on to star in Gallipoli (1981), which would earn him a second award for Best Actor from the AFI.
In 1980 he married Robyn Moore and as of today are still together and have seven children.
In 1984, Mel made his American debut in The Bounty (1984), which co-starred Anthony Hopkins. Then in 1987, Mel starred in what would become his signature series - Lethal Weapon (1987), in which he played Martin Riggs. In 1990, he took on the interesting starring role in Hamlet (1990), which garnered him some critical praise. He also made the more endearing Forever Young (1992), and the somewhat disturbing The Man Without a Face (1993). 1995 brought his most famous role as Sir William Wallace in Braveheart (1995), for which he won two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. From there, he made such box office hits as The Patriot (2000), Ransom (1996), and Payback (1999).
Today Mel remains an international superstar mogul, continuously topping the Hollywood power lists as well as the Most Beautiful and Sexiest lists. His $25 million paycheque for The Patriot (2000) was the latest milestone for actor's salaries. The year 2001 saw the release of an independent film in which Gibson had a featured role, The Million Dollar Hotel.
His last films have included starring roles in the comedy What Women Want (2001), the Vietnam War drama We Were Soldiers (2002) and the supernatural thriller Signs. In 2003 Gibson directed and produced "The Passion of the Christ", that is on track to gross between $350 million and $400 million. In 2005/2006, Mel Gibson directed "Apocalypto", a mythic action-adventure set against the turbulent end times of the once great Mayan civilization. The film opened on 8 December in USA and topped the weekendīs domestic box office.
On April 2, 2008, Mel Gibson committed to star in  "Edge of Darkness", marking his first starring role in a feature film since he headlined "Signs" and "We Were Soldiers" in 2002. "Edge of Darkness" will be released in 2010.
Many people were shock when Robyn Gibson filed for divorce on April 13, 2009, citing irreconcilable differences. In a joint statement, the Gibsons declared, "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so." Only two weeks later, on April 28, Mel Gibson made his first red carpet appearance alongside his lover, Oksana Grigorieva.
On July 2009, Mel Gibson signed to star in "The Beaver". Project is currently in rehearsals, with shooting slated for late September in New York.

FAMOUS RELATIVE

Eva Mylott, his paternal grandmother, was a well-known opera singer.
Eva left her native Australia at the beginning of the twentieth century to sing in America. She made her home in the Midwest, where she married John Hutton Gibson, and became a popular contralto on opera stages in Chicago and in parts of Canada. She gave birth to Melīs father, Hutton P. Gibson, in 1918. Still a young woman she died in 1920, after her second son, Alexander Mylott, was born.

"Iīm not saying Iīm the perfect dad.Iīm far from it. But the simple fact of the matter is there are sacrifices to be made, big decisions to be made-any parents know that"

A GREAT PRANKSTER

Since at least Lethal Weapon, Gibson has been known as a notorious on-set joker. After filming his characterīs near- suicide scene in that film, Gibson attached a red clown nose to his face to break the tension. Other times he had been prone to belch out loud for the same purpose.
While co-starring with Julia Roberts in Conspiracy Theory, Gibson sent her a gift-wrapped freeze dried rat as a present. Another time he showed up at Forever Young co-star Jamie Lee Curtisīs door wearing a hockey mask and wielding a knife, bringing back her memories of being an '80s horror queen from her stint in the Halloween movies.
During the production of The Patriot, he continued his comic antics. When director Roland Emmerich celebrated a birthday, Gibson hired the Carolina Panthers cheerleaders to sing him "Happy Birthday" which was followed by the filmīs extras giving a salute of their own. They mooned Emmerich, just as William Wallaceīs troops did to the British in a famous Braveheartīs scene.

On We Were Soldiers, Gibson sneaked up behind director Randall Wallace with a megaphone and said: "surely a man of your intelligence can see that the whole project is doomed."
In a recent interview, the reporter of Movieline magazine asked if Mel has decided to mature: "I think so," he answered, "Or iīm just getting slower".

"As a child, I wasnīt a holy terror-it was more passive-aggressive."

HUTTON P. GIBSON

"I donīt go in for personal heroes but I do have one-my old man.My admiration for him cannot be measured." Mel Gibson.
But whoīs Hutton P. Gibson?
Hutton is very religious and has passed this onto his son.
As a young man, Hutton decided to enter the priesthood and attended a seminary in Chicago, that he quit to join the army. After the Second World War, he worked as railroad brakeman and computer programmer.
During the late 1960īs, Hutton, shocked by the introduction and spread of the new order mass and driven by the idea that the mass should be always in Latin, began a campaign against the Vatican policy. He was secretary of the Latin Mass Society. Then he formed the Australian Alliance for Catholic Tradition, a splinter group of the Latin Mass Society. Heīs written several books exposing his ideas (Paulīs Legacy Catholicism).
He has also expressed some peculiar theories concerning the Holocaust and New York Sept 11. Hutton, recently remarried at the age of 83.

"My parents were religious working class people who at the same time were very well-educated- particularly my father- in literature, languages and philosophy."

"I just said, 'Help.' You know? And then, I began to meditate on it, and that's in the Gospel. I read all those again. I remember reading bits of them when I was younger."

"I don't want people to make it about the blame game. It's about faith, hope, love and forgiveness. That's what this film is about. It's about Christ's sacrifice."

MEMORIES

"As a kid I can distinctly remember being in the kitchen, looking   for cookies. After opening the low cupboard and not finding them, I hopped up on the top counter to look in those cabinets, then jumped back down to the floor. Trouble was, I had forgotten to shut the bottom cabinet door, and my legs werenīt long enough to hit the floor. I landed right on top of the door, right on my unmentionables. It was a real Stooge moment" Mel Gibson

"It was all right. The Christian Brothers had a hard-line discipline, which ainīt all bad. When I was there I really rebelled against it, but youīve got to toe the line sometime."

"Abortion?. Itīs inhuman because it destroys life."

THE HUSBAND

"Robin and I donīt fight much any more but I think I forgive first. Sometimes, my wife wonīt talk to me for a few days and I will not know what I did but itīs all forgiven in the end because I keep asking her 'Whatīs up?' when she isnīt talking to me and I have to figure out what I did wrong. But most of the time we donīt go through all the rituals anymore in that - we know weīll still be together at the end of the argument so we now have a short track to avoid all the angst." Mel Gibson
"I hate work and felt lost. I had been driving myself crazy worrying about who I was and what I was doing. Robyn ordered me to take a year off to rechange my batteries...Robyn made me realise what I was doing to myself and my family and life became easier."

THE FATHER

"I donīt lavish millions on my children but I donīt let them starve either. You have to make sure your children are healthy and they have a roof over their head and thatīs it. Beyond that, they have to strive to make things happen. My children understand that. And they also know that Iīm not stingy or mean, I just believe that if they really want something, they have to go out and work for it." Mel Gibson
"Thereīs nothing more important than your family. If you ruin that part of your life, whatīs left?."

"I saw other film versions and I couldn't understand them, I couldn't believe them. Once I started meditating on [Christ's] passion, really going deep into it in my own mind and heart, then I began to understand it, to believe that's the version I put on film."
